I thought I had asked this, but...
« on: March 30, 2006, 01:42:29 PM »

Weirdness, I thought I had posted this a couple of days ago, but I guess not...

Here we go..

The polished part of the cylinder fins are starting to look pretty crappy. Kinda discolored and almost oxidized looking. Mostly forward facing only seems to be suffering. Kinda' looks like an older bike now that hasn't been kept up too good.

You guys/gals got any ideas on bringing that part back to life..?? Wetsanding, polishing, grinding...???

Again, it's not the silver painted part, which is another story all together, but the actual fin edges...

Take some 1500 wet paper to them. That'll bring them right back.

Funny....I kinda thought that might be an option...

I tried my new Dremel, but that was a mistake....the tip I used was too abrasive and it just about took too much of the aluminum off as opposed to simply polishing it...

Thanks..

You're really just retouching the raw aluminum there Ron.  Only two words of caution.  Use your hand or some other contact piece behind the sandpaper that is large enough you won't slip between the fins (seen that mistake elsewhere).  And don't just rub and rub without looking very often.  You might find you've made one area look so good you end up having to work your way all the way around both cylinders before you're done (my own mistake a couple of years ago).

I've actually started with 600 and then went gradually up to the 1500 grit on a set of evo barrels that were pretty bad. I would start with 1500 and see if its cutting, you may have to go down some if its not aggressive enough. Like 2lane said check often. I have a 1/4"x2"x4" piece of rubber that I use. Its flexible to go around the corners yet back the paper up. You can get these at any automotive paint supply store.
