Chrome Rotors
« on: December 12, 2011, 09:24:01 AM »

Has any one replaced both front rotors for chrome?
 Is it worth the price?
          Thanks Older Guy

I did, back in the early 80s.  They don't stop for chit and will warp really quickly.  You might want to consider polished rotors. :2vrolijk_21:

I had chrome rotors a few years ago on a customized Big Dog, I would agree with the previous poster that they did not perform as well as polished rotors.  Then again, that bike was a Big Dog, and it had other issues as well.  Just my opinion.

If you mean the entire rotor being chrome, including the friction surface, it would be fine for a show bike, but not very practical for a bike that gets ridden.  For a couple of reasons.

I agree, tried it for a friend who insisted on all chrome, did not stop well or hold up.  Polish the SS rotors and they look great.

How should they be polished? By hand or with a buffer?

The plating and polishing shop will use a number of different wheels on it.  They can polish it down to the point where you may think it's chrome.  Polished stainless is really nice. :2vrolijk_21:

It's not something you want to try in your garage if you don't have any experience at polishing stainless.

If it makes you feel better, stainless steel is about 10% chromium (that's what makes it more corrosion resistant than regular steel).  So you already have chromed rotors, in a sense.

Had my front rotors polished 2 years ago when changing the front wheel and they came back looking like chrome. two years later and people ask me if they were chromed.
