88 to 95 build questions
« on: November 17, 2010, 09:22:11 AM »

I have a 2001 RG I’m about to build the motor on. I just obtained a bunch of new stuff from the previous owner who was going to build it but didn’t.  I have the SE 95 inch big bore kit with the SE forged high compression pistons, SE MCR heads, SE258 cams, Crane ignition HI-4TC and coil, Zippers S&S Super G carb kit, Jims roller rocker arms and Jims lifters. My question is does this package seem like a good combination of parts? Do I really need to change the rocker arms or should I just stay with what the SE heads have already installed? Finally what would be a good guess as to how much HP and Torque once done?

Depending on what your after that build should get you in the 100HP range  , roller rockers are kinder to the valve train.

The big thing to investigate is whether or not that cam suits your riding style.

My riding style varies a lot. Sometimes I'm trying to out run every one around me then other times just slow and easy and always one up. I would like the torque to come on strong at around 2500 RPM and up with plenty of horse power on the top end. I plan on running a 2/1 Pro pipe or a D&D Fat cat 2/1 so either of those should help the torque out a bit. Not sure where to find out what the SE258 would be best suited for. The SE catalogue says its a high power version of the SE257.

My last build was a 103 with SE259E cams along with flat tops, SE MCR heads plus a Thundermax auto tune. It was a beast ran away from every body either roll on or top end. If this build did as good as that set up I would be happy. Its been a long time since I messed with carbs. Is that Super G going to be too big of a carb for a 95 inch twin cam? Is it going to make my MPG drop drastically?

One of our builds that folks love, is to bore to 98", Wood 6 cams, and our Stage III Head.
Comes right off the bottom, and pulls all the way to 5500 rpms plus.
With that head/bored Delphi/Fatcat combo, Brian, on T-Man's dyno, has shown 110/110 SAE.
I will add that the G, may pull some low-end torque from that.

OK group of parts. Would use a Mik 42 not the G and despite the high compression (10.4/1) will be a bit soggy down low with only 184 psi CCP and a corrected for cam CR of 8.9/1.

My suggestions based on the parts you are trying to use:
Change cams, S&S 570 or Wood TW6H
Do minor headwork to clean up the ports and good valve work, CC the chambers and adjust the spring pressure, "BluePrint" only
Use SE Cast Flat top pistons
Purchase a DTT ignition box
Use a MLS .030 hg
Mikuni 42
Get yourself a real good pipe and the result will be the same HP and TQ peak as the SE258 deal but you will have a lot more punch down low and it will be a lot more fun to ride

No rocker supports needed
Roller rockers suggested but not needed

End result 105/105 SAE and hit 100TQ by 2,600

With the larger valves of the SE heads useing SE Cast Flat top piston you will need to open the eyebrows on those pistons. Also the rocker will need to be clearanced for the larger valve springs.   Doc

Really last build I did was with the same SE heads and flat tops on a 103 big bore and had no clearance issues at all. I used the SE259E cams all was fine. Actually I did the same build about 5 years ago with SE203 cams on a 02 SE RK with a 95 kit in it already, no problems.

I'm second guessing my thoughts on the heads anyway. May sell them and have mine redone by Larrys then go with a different cam all together.

I was referring to Dons suggested build above (DeweysHeads) If you have the cylinders cut to zero deck and mill the heads to 76 cc and use the .030" head gasket your are amost sure to kiss the valve to the piston with the Cast Flat Tops.   Doc

Hi Scott!
Hi Don!
You guys are every where! :bananarock:

LOL WELL THESE BOYS KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO....... :2vrolijk_21:

Laughing........yep, I would BUILD A "MOUSE CAM ON STILTS"

AND OF COURSE WHAT ELSE BOYS, LOL THAT'S RIGHT.........., LET IT BREATHEEEEEEE, LET IT BREATHEEEEEEE, LET THE DAMN THING BREATHEEEEEE

Laughing, oh well, that's what I would do.

If the following interests you then that's what I would do:

107 FT LBS OF TORQUE @ 3400-3800 rpms
105 FT LBS OF TORQUE @ 3300-4200 rpms***
100 FT LBS OF TORQUE @ 2800-5000 rpms*
95   FT LBS OF TORQUE @ 2700-5400 rpms
90   FT LBS OF TORQUE @ 2500-5800 rpms

60    HP @ 3050 rpms
80    HP @ 3990 rpms
95    HP @ 5250 rpms
100  HP @ 5600-5800 rpms

* with a d&d fat cat you might see 100 FT LBS OF TORQUE earlier than 2800 rpms, the above results were attained with a SuperTrapp 2:1.

***With 3.37 final gearing have you ever noticed in 5th gear at 3300-4200 rpms what speed you are going, well you are cruising @ 75-95 mph and with this build you have the potential of 105 LBS OF TORQUE AT YOUR RIGHT HAND..........hmmmmmm the "perfect storm" for interstate riding or the critical passing speeds as well.
Oh yeah baby, LET IT BRREATHEEEE, LET IT BREATHEEEEEE, LET THE DAMN THING BREATHEEEEEEEEEEE"

Yep a "MOUSE CAM ON STILTS"

Andrews 21, OEM Heads, with 1.94 intake valves, 1.580 exhaust valves, cc'd to 84, new springs, new valve guides, new valve seals, having heads properly flowing, .030" HG, and of course the "stilts" lol SE Pro  High Lift Rocker Arms (1.725") which will take the lift of this "MOUSE CAM" to a "MOUSE CAM ON STILTS" from a .498" lift to a .528" lift, which basically makes this engine a "mild" cam set up.......easier on the valve train and brings the TORQUE BAND TO THE LEFT AND EXTENDS VERY FAR TO THE RIGHT WITH THE SE Pro High Lift Rocker Arms.

This build won't necessarily make you the "fastest" bike buttttttt it sure will make you one of the quickest bikes, zip, zip, zip quick.

By the way you should have the 3.37 final gearing which work awesome with this particular build as well.

Regards,

Tim

Changed my plans now I'm going with 1550 flat tops, same SE MCR heads and the Andrews TW54 then probably add a Mikuni 42
Flatslide and not use the S&S Super G. It should be a good mid range build with plenty of zip form 2600 to 5200 no problem.
