HID Conversion for Passing Lamps
« on: December 04, 2010, 04:20:10 PM »

I have the XeonLink conversion kit for my main headlight and have never been able to find anything good to match the passing lamps. I noticed the other day XeonLink sells a 880/881 Bulb kit now. I inquired regarding the bulb and they said it is an 881 type bulb. I know my passing lamps can use an 881 bulb so I was wondering if anyone has tried this kit or looked at it. I m sure the issue will be the ballasts and where to put them but if the wire was long enough it could be routed somewhere. Let me know what you think here is the link below..

There have been HID kits with that bulb type.  Nothing new there.  The problem several have run in to is that the bulbs themselves are too long to fit in the lamps.  They touch the inside of the glass lens.

You'll also have to take all the brackets off each side of the bike.  Runner a bit through the holes the smaller wires currently go through to allow the larger wires on the HID bulbs to fit.  Will have to cut the ends off the HID bulbs that connect to the ballasts so the wires can be threaded through the spotlight brackets.  The splice the connector ends back on.  In other words it's a task that, if it doesn't work, there ain't no way you're sending parts back where they came from.

Or...if you absolutely have to match, you could get these. A bit pricey. :o

Clark Hemrick of Hemrick Performance does a clean HID install in the passing lamps. He has found a manufacturer that makes a shorter bulb and runs the wiring out the back bottom of the housing. Makes a huge difference added with the single HID main beam. I have them on my FLHTCUSE4 and have the brackets to add the passing lights on my FLHX with the HID conversion. Check out his web site, he has lots of pics and info or message me and I will send pics of my bike. Highly recommended!!!

Here are some pics of the HID lights in the passing lights. One pic is of how Clark tackled the larger wiring for the HID system. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I did the same thing with factory spot lamps (wire running out of the housing directly to the ballast inside the fairing). There is a big problem though. The factory lamps are spot lamps and scatter the light. As a result, it shoots the light everywhere, and creates tremendous glare to oncoming traffic. I got hi beamed constantly. I switched to an Adjure bucket & headlamp and found that even the 4 1/2 inch headlamps still put out way too much glare using an H4 bulb. Then I moved up to a 5 3/4 inch bucket and headlamp, and the problem was solved. The focal point of the bulb is good and the light pattern puts the light on the road, not in the eyes of people in front or behind you. I never get hi beamed anymore and at night it's as bright as noon day---almost.

Sorry you had so many issues with glare and people hi beaming you with the factory passing lights and HID bulbs. I haven't had any oncoming traffic complain about the HID lights. My philosophy is I would prefer to "agitate" the eyes of the other motorists as this means they actually see me in the maze of the surroundings and other automobiles. I think this is a better alternative to the hospital or worse yet the grave. I do have the lights adjusted to create a better close field scatter pattern which may help. Just my opinion.
