Tuner before break in?
« on: July 20, 2011, 06:15:26 PM »

Can anyone give me some good input about having a SEPST installed before the break in period is over?  Does it hurt to do that and then have a bike dyno tuned when it has just a few hundred miles on it?  I'm not very competent when it comes to internal parts of the engine....

"installing" a SEPST will do nothing at all to your bike.

No dyno time before the bike is properly run in

I would break it in first before hitting the dyno

That was my thoughts, as well.  I'm looking at a used SESG with 400+ miles and SESPT...I was just wondering how concerned I should be about the bike being put on a dyno too early.

Listen for any strange noises from the motor--oh wait---they all do that :confused5:

I had mine on the dyno before I picked it up.  Seams to be fine.

I've owned four other 110's....I'm still trying to figure out which strange noises are "normal"   :nixweiss:....just don't want to compound an already common noise problem by dyno tuning too early if it makes any difference.  What are the possible side effects of doing that to an engine before break in is complete?

If the tuner will help you, break it in on the dyno, you can control the load, put a hi output fan on the motor and "break it in", whatever that means very quickly. Break in for me is to run from 2000 RPM to Redline and then ride it down three times in third gear. I am done after that, and over the years it has always worked for me, Jap, Harley whatever. Never had one to use oil or have any other problem.

I'd break it in on the dyno,  much better controlled conditions, then tune it right after break in.

If the bike has "a few hundred miles on it", it's already broke in and rings are seated.

Having said that, I know of several dealerships that install tuners on new bikes and dyno tune them before the buyer ever takes possession.  They put the first 50 miles on to seat the rings then go for it.  Had that done on a couple of new bikes before I met Jim......no problem.

It's really no different than going out there from stop light to stop light and twisting the throttle till you get up near the rev limiter and doing that over and over.  I remember when that was the normal way of riding. ;D

Really appreciate all the input.  I have not purchased the bike yet and I'm not sure it's ever been on a dyno.  But, it's advertised with a few hundred miles and a SEPST installed already.  I just wasn't sure what kind of risk I'm assuming with a low mileage bike that someone else has already started "adjusting"...

Probably not much risk beyond what anyone assumes when they buy a Harley these days.  Buying it staight off the end of the assembly line is no guarantee either.

Is the seller a private individual or a dealership?  Ask to see any records, receipts, etc. for any work performed to date.  If all they did was sell the guy a SEPST and load one of the canned maps (which a ton of dealerships do as soon as they sell the bikes), it may have never been on a dyno and the whole subject becomes moot.  If there is a receipt with a charge for a dyno tune, then you know for sure.  And even if it was on a dyno, that doesn't necessarily mean anything negative.  A pro can break a bike in on the dyno much more efficiently than the average rider can on the street.
