It's actually a cool reaction.  Just keeps growing on itself when the outer oxide layer on aluminum gets breached and the mercury amalgam gets to be like the energizer bunny; just keeps going and going and going and going. 

If there's anyone on the site who works in aircraft maintenance they can speak to this.  But I remember reading several years ago a long scary list of regs for the quarantine procedure an aircraft has to go through if even a tiny bit of mercury gets in.

Lots of contraband showed up and passed thru without detection in the security tests across our county.  Seems the operaters are less than accurate in the monitoring processes.  Makes one wonder how we continue to be so 'lucky' in our defenses.
