How hot is hot
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:34:39 PM »

I was recently told by my local dealer that my 110in cvo Fatbob can reach as hot as 330 degrees :nixweiss:Would like to know if this is true and what temperatures other people are running?

Temperature measured where?  The cylinder head temperature can get much higher than 330° F, if that's what he's talking about.  If he's talking about oil temperature, it might get that hot under the right conditions but you really don't want to let that happen.  Get it tuned, and install an oil cooler if you're seeing oil temps above 250° F on a regular basis.

Its oil temp measured with a digital readout cap from HD.I had the bike tuned on a dyno.

330 F is a lot of oil temperature...  I've never seen over 300 oil temp while riding on the hottest of days (measuring temperature in the pan).  I've seen 320 F oil temp once or twice in stop and go traffic on a hot day.

Typical riding oil temperature for me is 250 to 280 F on a hot (80 to 90 F) summer day, two up pulling the Bushtec.  210 - 230 F is normal temperature when just riding.

While I have saw mine (oil temp gauge....lead in the bottom of the case) get that hot a time or two when the ambient temp was hot (that term is relavant.....I'm talking 103F-112F), it cools back down relatively fast when we get rolling again.  In those kind of temps, my oil 240F to 320F depending on how I'm riding, traffic flow vs. stop n go, etc.

You guys back there tease us about not knowing what "cold" is, in the winter when it gets down in the 30s-40s.  You guys back there don't know what hot is......80-90F is warm.....hot is in the triple digits! ;D

So that's a little revenge on our side, right?  hehehe!

We get very few days over 90F...  But you know what they say....it's not the heat....it's the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ .....   ;D

Check the temp you get with that dipstick, and then check it with a "real" temp probe and I bet you get something different, I know I did!

I have an oil temp gauge with the sensor in the crankcase.  Max oil temp I have ever seen was 270 degrees while riding two-up on a 7 mile mountain rode, 12% grade, where curves limited me to 1st and 2nd gear only.  Other than that, I normally see 230-250 in summer stop and go traffic.  I have a CUSE with an oil cooler, true duals, and my 110 has been dynoed.

I've often wondered about this myself.  My springer has V&H 2-2 with SERT & dyno tune. Had it done by the dealer.  I have the analog oil temp stick and it reads 200-210 after running 70 mph for 45 minutes during warm ambient temperatures.  I'm thinking the mixture might be alittle too rich.
