Six Speed Conversion
« on: December 25, 2005, 03:10:50 PM »

Hey Group!
I am not trying to boast, or anything like that, I am just really excited. I just got my FLHRSEI2 back from the shop. I had the SE 6-Speed conversion done as a present to myself (wife thinks 5 is ok) and I am a happy camper. So used to stopping at fifth, and than kick it another gear, the engine settles down, and I am pulkling High 2,900's RPM's at 85! So-o-o-o very, very nice. It also lets me hear my XM satellite better, as before, over 70 M.P.H. almost not worth having the tunes on.
I sent a "Request for Competetive Bid" out to six of the closest H-D dealers; got three responses, and it turned out that the closest one to me (one I go to anyway) was between $300.00 and $800.00 cheaper respectively!
I have only drivenn it twice (isn't that ridden?) so I do not have a lot to report. I will update this, good and badd, as it unfolds.
Cripple Creek Here I Come!!!
I wish all of you and your family & friends, the very best this Holiday season, and all the year through. Please be safe, and I'll see you there...
It was 73 degrees outside yesterday here in Sunny California! Na-na-na-na-nah! [smiley=banana.gif]

Hey Nasty,

Mid-60s down the road here!  Pretty nice today now that the fog has burned off.  I'm excited to see how it goes for you along the way on that 6 speed.  I'm going to sell my '05 KLR-650, so it looks like my paint-matched Dragonfly will come sooner than I thought.  Have a merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I assume you went with the gear set only vs buying the entire tranny.
May I ask how much it cost for each component of the job.  ie labor  and parts?

Thanks

Hey IROAR,
As I recall Paul (Nasty) had it done on a 'Winter Special' at a local (CA) dealership. They're advertising $2,450 for parts and labor, regular price is $3,249 and this is for the gear insall rather than the whole transmission change. We've had crappy weather here the past few weeks, so doubt if he's gotten much riding time to see how he likes it. I want to hear how he likes it and all before I do the same deal. I'm still 50/50 on the conversion myself, but the deal runs through February, so there's still time before taxes huh ?

Glad to hear you liked it I have one waiting for the SEUC to show up.  Some people had complained they where noisey in 6th gear.  Glad to hear that you think it is quieter.

I've been thinking of doing this change too.  My dealer has a special running for $2,349 installed including the cover and clip which are also needed.  Not sure if this is a great deal or not.  They say this is good for about a 500rpm drop going from 5th to 6th on the highway.  Thoughts...

Have had my SE HD 6 Speed since last May, have over 10,000 mile since then. It took a drive from Phoenix to Blythe to get used to it.

I have no noise in sixth gear.

I went for the complete Transmission, not the gear set. First choice was the Baker DD6, however last spring the delivery from Baker was apprx. 8 weeks.

No complaints, I am using Red Line HD Shockproof in the transmission.

The best thing about the 6-speed conversion is the reduced amount of vibration on long trips. Dropping several hundred RPM's at highway speeds is a huge fatigue reducer. For years, I averaged 500 mile days. Now, 600 feels like 500 and 700 mile days are the norm. I find myself spending less time  getting to that Zen place where my face is the headlight, my arms are the fork tubes, my legs the swingarm - - - - - - -  ooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Got the SERK back with about 200 miles on the complete SE transmission. The H D dealer shot me a price that I just had to take the bait, 3110.18 for the trans, side cover, SE oil for prymary, engine, tranny and all nessesary gaskets, labor and tax.  I ask myself Was it worth it? I'll just have to ride it all summer and wipe the bugs off my teeth and I'll answer to myself then.
