HD Lighted Spoiler
« on: December 20, 2010, 02:51:20 PM »

Installed the HD LED run/brake spoiler this weekend on my 2008 SEUC.  Fairly straight forward installation.  Wired the lead directly into the lighting harness of the tour pak.

Here’s the thing… the difference in brightness/intensity from the run light to the brake light is very little, i.e. while depressing the brake it get brighter just not much.  I’d be willing to bet that during a bright day it might not even be noticeable unless you were really staring right into the strip.  I searched but didn’t find any other threads on this, maybe I just missed them…

Has anyone else noticed this too?  Anyone figured a way to make one brighter than the other?  Seeing as it’s and LED circuit I don’t think a simple resister in line with the run light would do it.

Sounds just like mine!  Not thrilled with it for sure.   I added a Bright Ass Light (BAL).

Mine does pretty much the same...at night it will work, but during the day, not overly big difference.  I added the HD LED tail light to my RUSE...now that mofo is bright!!! If you can't see that during the day, then there is definitely a problem.

Well gentlemen after playing with this for a bit I’ve come up with the following fix which I’m happy with.  The BLUE wire on the spoiler light is the running light supply wire.  I went to Rad-Shack and picked up some resisters and tried various combinations of resisters in line with this wire until I was satisfied with the spoiler running light matching (luminous) the other running lights and a good separation between the spoiler’s running light and brake light.  NOTE:  my cycle is still running the standard running/brake lights.

I ended up using one (1) 330 ohm resister.  Soldered this in line on the BLUE wire and covered it with some shrink wrap.  To me this provided the best overall match for running lights and running/brake light separation.  Total cost for my R&D, < $3.00.

Good luck.

Well this forum always amazes me. The dealer called today to notify me that my spoilers are in. Will pick them up in the morn and mount them. That was an excellent suggestion about the resistors and will try the same 330s if i have the same problem.  thanks, Ted

+ 3 on the BAL.  I'd have saved some $$$ if the BAL had been out (or I'd known about it) a couple of years ago and not spent the money for the HD tour pak spoiler/LED and the saddlebag spoilers/LED's which are, by comparison IMO, essentially cosmetic accessories moreso than lighting accessories.

Carl

PS:  Apologies to the OP for my reply as it wasn't intended to diminish his innovative use of a resistor in the tour pak spoiler LED wiring and generously sharing the innovation with others on this forum.  Rather, my reply was for those considering alternative lighting for their tour pak equipped bikes who may not have already purchased the tour pak spoiler LED and may be considering other lighting alternatives to add additional lighting to the bike's rear.

Yes, that's exactly how it's done.  You'll want to run the resister inline with the BLUE wire, i.e. cut BLUE wire, solder in the resister.  Make sure the resister is fully shielded after installation just like you would with any electrical connection.

I guess we'll have to settle for whatever pics you have... I'm sure they will be good.

Thanks!
