Contour HD Helmet Camera
« on: January 04, 2011, 09:39:31 PM »

Happy New Year to All,

Hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and all the very best of riding in 2011!

I purchased a Contour HD Helmet Camera a few months back and have to say that I'm totally thrilled with the quality of video and sound with a camera that only weighs 4oz.  It is such an easy camera to use and gives incredible results!

http://contour.com/

It is very simple to download the videos from the camera and view on my computer.  I am however having a problem with editing my videos and wondered what software is most popular with everyone.

I especially would like to know if any other members have purchased a Contour and which software they use... The software that comes with the camera is NOT very useful and does not allow you to share with others.  :(

Any help that you could pass along to this frustrated video freak would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Try "Video Pad Video Editor" for 30 days free. It's the best I found but did not purchase it. It was the only thing I found to edit & upload to Youtube.

I just got Adobe Premiere (photo editing) and Premiere Elements (video capture/editing) on a combo deal for around $90 I think. Premiere Elements is pretty dang powerful on what it can do. Also very easy to create a professional dvd, add music/narration, take stills from video, publish to youtube/share files, etc. My only nit pick is it's rather slow even on a "decent" system (Phenom II @3.2Ghz with 4Gb of memory - dedicated machine so nothing else running).

It can utilize native digital video from any device, and can even capture analog video with a A/D converter installed inline (my need for purchase, to put old VHS videos on dvd).

Just scratching the surface of the program but so far pretty happy with it. For $90 bucks (and with the power of Premier photo editing included) it was a no brainer for me.

Griz...just a few questions about the contour...Did you purchase the GPS or original HD? Do you see a benefit / need for the GPS version? How much did you pay for it? What accessories / mount did you purchase or would you purchase now? Thanks!

Hi Doc,

I'm not sure if the GPS version was available when I purchased my HD Contour.  Apparently now with the GPS camera after downloading you can split the screen and watch your video AND see a map of your location at the same time.  I have never been a big GPS user so it really doesn't appeal to me... The G in my GPS stands for Grizzly, ha, ha!

Next up in a few months they will be introducing Blue Tooth technology so that you can see what you are shooting on an iPhone.  I think a lot of this stuff coming out is geared towards skiers, snowboarders and skydivers who use this camera quite often and make up the better part of Contour's customer base.  My HD camera does me just fine and I'm amazed at the quality of video such a small camera gives.  I recently used it at a friend's wedding and it worked great just holding it in my hand... Most didn't even notice that I was holding something and was filming!

I actually looked at this camera a couple of years ago, but then it wasn't HD and was priced well over $1k.  I'm glad I waited because last spring I paid $350.00 taxes in with 2 different mounts and an extra battery.  I chose not permanently mount it to the side of my helmet, but used the goggle strap mount and was able to use it on my side helmet strap.  I wear a half helmet that has the V-shaped straps over the ear section.  Works great once if figured out the right angle to position the camera.  I have since purchase a couple of additional 16 meg cards so now I have the ability to record for hours.

Hope this helps.  Good luck!

I got the Contour GPS as a Christmas gift but with work and all the snow in the NE I have not really used it much. I just got the suction cup windshield mount for use in the car, but I may regret that as a buddy of mine takes his 911 to as many track days as he can and I see him eyeing my camera already.

As for editing, I have it easy as my wife is a post production editor for ABC TV and ESPN. I just built her an editing PC for home (Core i7, 16GB RAM, and SSD disks) and installed Adobe CS5 so as soon as we cut some video I'll post it. The GPS model records position, speed and elevation data along with the video so it will be interesting to see how 3rd party editing tools deal with that data. More to come on that one. It will be great if we have a video clip section of the CVO gatherings. Very cool toy and as Griz mentioned it's reasonably priced now compared to what they used to be.

Thanks Mike! Please keep us informed about the extra data and how that may or may not effect editing software. I wonder if it's possible to utilize that data to create a route track for a gps navigation? Anyway thanks for keeping us informed. And by the way, that's one hell of a piece of editing hardware you've got there!

Doc,

No problem. The wife knows after I built that rig for her that I would be tapping into her editing skills from time to time. I forgot to mention the video card in it is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 which is a monster. The card alone draws 250w of power when it is running. I just loaded Flight Sim X on it and cranked up the detail to max on all settings to see if I could choke it. It did not flinch an I am sure I heard it laughing at me from somewhere deep inside...

Enough geeking out, I am off to the NY Motorcycle Show to check out all the parts I cannot afford now after building this PC.

Mike you seem like a gadget guy...I've been looking at a way to go completely wireless via Blu-Tooth (in helmet) to integrate Stereo, CB, Intercom, iPhone, and Navigation with one system. I think J&M has got it nailed...check this out...http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=58389.0

Guilty as charged Doc. I already added my $.02 to that other thread. :)  I use the XBi2 for phone, intercom and music. It does more but I have not played with it long enough to comment yet.
