montana vacation.
« on: February 01, 2011, 12:36:01 PM »

I am trying to plan a family vacation to Montana and I would like to know if anyone knows of a good place to stay. It would be my whole family (parents, in-laws, brother, wife, and daughter ) roughly 10 of us. A few of us will ride our bikes up and the others will take a van. We would like to be close to Yellowstone but also close to other activities like 4-wheelers, horseback riding, fishing, etc. We want a cabin and we would stay about a week. Thanks in advance.

Have you thought about Red Lodge, Mt?    http://www.beartoothhighway.com/

just south of the Montana border is a town called Cody, WY.  Cody Cowboy Villiage is a great place, indiviual cabins next to one another, kind of motel like but individual.  A lot of people will tell you about Beartooth Pass, and Chief Joseph Skyway.  Cody is  close to that, and probably 150 miles east of Yellowstone.  Lots of great areas to ride, you are only a couple hundred miles from Jackson WY (Jackson Hole Ski area) which is another fun town.  Red Lodge is a great area in Montana, but you have a pretty long hike to get to Yellowstone.

I like Cody as a base camp for a bike. From there you can go north to Redlodge, west to Yellow Stone and east to the Big Horn Mtns.

Once you decide on a base station area, go to
www.vrbo.com

They have houses you can rent all over the country.
We use them all the time when we have 4/6 or more people going.

I've stayed in Red Lodge four times and Cody three times and there isn't a bad choice between them.  Cody is just slightly more citified...there's shopping available.  If you like rustic and hiking, Red Lodge is better.  Beartooth pass is the bomb!  Don't go over the side.

St. Mary's Resort on the east side of Glacier National Park at the end of the Going To The Sun Hwy. is a fabulous place.

Red Lodge, Mt. to Silver Gate (northeast entrance) is 64 miles and 1 hr. 11 min.

Cody, Wy. to the East Gate is 50 miles and 54 minutes.
