GaugeFace for the iPhone
« on: February 19, 2011, 10:32:06 AM »

Check out this new iPhone interface for Harley ECUs that reports live vehicle data:

http://gaugeface.com/

From Engadget.com (http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/17/gaugeface-iphone-dock-displays-your-harleys-data-on-a-3-5-inch/):
"GaugeFace is an app-and-dock combo that interfaces with your Harley's ECU (Engine Control Unit) to display the bike's speed, tachometer, engine temp., gear, and turn signal info on your iPhone or iPod touch. And the installation is almost as easy as setting your phone in a charging cradle. So, what do you think? Ready to turn your late-model motorcycle into an overpriced -- yet totally bad-ass -- iPod dock? Available for an MSRP of $250. See it in action after the break, or it the source link to order up one of these bad boys for yourself."

Can't wait to try one!

Just went out and checked.  My bikes already have gauges and indicators.  It must suck not to have gotten them.  The assembly lines really are slipping ::) .

Ah, but can they tell you the engine temperature too?  :huepfenjump3:

One of the "skins" for this is a heads-up display that uses the iPhone camera to show the background. I thought that this was clever.

LOL! Maybe yours - not mine. I have an Otterbox iPhone Defender case mounted to a Kuryakyn Harley Fuel Door Accessory Mount.  :o

I have seen the Otterbox defender, but did not remember that it was waterproof, so I just checked their website and it states on the bottom of the page  -----  Otterbox iphone defender case is NOT protective against water. It specifically states that it is only good against shock, drop and dust intrusion.  I doubt that mounting it to a Kuryakyn fuel door accesory mount would make it waterproof ?? :nixweiss:   IMO -- the gaugeface for $250.00 is a lot of money to spend for gauges that you already have, and turn indicators that you already have. You are only gaining a temp gauge and an ugly electrical connector hanging from your dash. If your bike is running to hot -- what will you do about it anyway -- quit riding it until the sun goes down?  As for the "heads up" display  ---  you can also see the same thing by looking over the widshield. But to each, his own. I have surely spent more than $250.00 on things a lot crazier than the Gaugeface. Let us know how you like it. Maybe there will be something that I am missing.

You are correct. The defender is not waterproof and I do not trust it in any rain - I pull the phone off and put it in my pocket. There are open holes on the bottom, at the ear, and around the noise canceling mike at the top.  :)

And you are right that $250 is a lot of moola for an engine temp gauge - I already know that my engine could fry bacon to a crisp in Arctic weather at midnight. I think that GaugeFace envisions their market to be bikes that do not have a tach. Their web site shows it on a Sportster.

As for the iPhone mounted on my bike: I use it in non-rainy weather to make it easier to make calls since the original (since discontinued) Harley Bluetooth Module address book integration is cumbersome to operate.

PS: I laughed at your rain gauge post! Thanks! ;D
