Extra Ticking Noise
« on: February 23, 2011, 03:10:39 PM »

I have been experiencing a new ticking noise in addition to the loud valve train noise between 2000 and 2500 RPM.  This noise is dreadful at idle up to where the wind noise covers it. It started after a hard time cranking and then firing only on one cylinder for a few minutes.  After many trips to Harley with the usual answer of "that is normal", I bought a stethoscope and starting going over the engine.  I found the tick to be on right rear side of the rear cylinder second and third cooing fin from the top.  The sound cannot be duplicated anywhere else including the front cylinder.  Any clues?

Thanks.

Which bike are you talking about?

Several things come to mind, and I'd suggest starting with the simplest.  Exhaust leaks at the head can make noises that anyone would swear are internal, and your specified top rear location would be in that area.  Another item that has been problematic in recent years is the rear cylinder exhaust valves seizing in the guides.  Then we have the valve lifter failures that tend to sound like the top end also.  And if you have one of the engines with the automatic compression releases, they are always a suspect as well.

It's very hard to diagnose a noise over the internet, and unfortunately with a Harley there are a multitude of fairly common issues that could cause your problem.  You might want to find a good independent mechanic to help you narrow this down, since it appears your dealership is staffed with the typical hear nothing, see nothing, do nothing types.

Good luck.

When this all started I took bike while on a trip to a harley dealer in Jacksonville.  He did compression tests and other things and declared all was well in spite of an unusual ticking sound.

If you think you were only running on one cylinder for a bit, I would strongly suspect you have a valve sticking in a guide.  It's not uncommon for a valve to stick just slightly open (loosing compression) a few times before it sticks open enough that a piston tags it.  (Ask Chip...he experienced this on his 09.)  Noises are rarely "nothing". Especially new noises...   :nixweiss:

Or a broken valve guide.

Definitely sounds valve-related coming from that area.

McDonaldroadcapt, I would tend to agree with the guys who say it is possible you have a small exhaust leak on your rear cylinder. Also check all your chrome heat shields etc. Let us know when you get it fixed.CAHDBIKER

Have completely ruled out exhaust leak. I think that it is in the valve train or a loose ACR.  Will perform another compression test as soon as I get tool to eliminate ACR problem.  Thanks for all responses.

I am running Rinehart True Duals on the 2008 Ultra CVO110.

It's been a while, but the '08 CVO Ultras along with the 906 Enhancement recall, had to have new heads or at least a new rear head, as I remember.

Have you owned this since new?  Did it have the 906 upgrade done?  The SEUC has a lot more heat than the Road Kings of the same year and the valve guides were giving the Ultras some problems.

I know that even if it did have the upgrade done, if it were done right at the begining, there may have been better parts later in the recall process.

I would really check out the valve train areas like the others have said.

Good luck with your ticking noise...
