Has anyone looked into swapping the housing/illumination from the air temp gauge into the oil cooler guage?? I was just curious if this could be done so we could have the best of both worlds.

The lighting is physically different also.  No swap.

The oil temp gauge is internally light and has printed circuit board on the back of it so switching the housing I think would be out.  I'm almost positive even if you could back light the gauge It would not allow the light to illuminate the dots and numbers being they seem not to be translucent like the stock gauge faces.
