CB Help
« on: March 10, 2011, 02:15:31 PM »

I've only tried to use my CB a few times with channels like 14, 17, 19 & 27 but it never seams to work.  What is the range of these?  I have a J & M internal antenna.  Suggestions appreciated.

Imho, those J&M internal antennas are junk.  If you do a little digging in this Electronics Forum, Sklywag, has done a lot of research with aftermarket antennas, and with a little tweaking, you can make some pretty big preformance improvements. Stock, the units are good for approx 1/2 to as much as 1 mile, if line of sight.

On my 06, I removed the Tour-Pak coil and mounted a Firestik, and was able to get out to just about 3 miles down an interstate. I'm hoping with a little more work, I'll make some more incremental improvements.  Regarding range, it will definitely help to have the other riders in your group do the same.

With the internal antenna, you're likely to eventually blow your finals on the cb.  SWR match on the internal is probably through the roof.

If they are like the J&M versions (and I think they are, from what I can tell...perhaps HD got J&M to make them?), I had those on my 06 SEUC and they worked fine.  Supposedly, they were "tuned" for the CB's on Harleys, but that's just what they said.  They did work though, but I can't attest to the effective range, other than they worked fine from the front of a 100 or so bikes to the rear of the pack (so, a mile or so).

Internal CB antenna's by design cannot work, if they do they will end the end destroy the output of the CB
