Question on ESP Tire and Wheel package
« on: March 19, 2011, 11:33:22 AM »

I have a SESG2 on order and I am strongly considering the 7 year ESP with the T&W package. Couple of questions:

1. Is everybody happy with the stock Dunlop tires? Kind of locks you into these tires if you get the warranty. Do they perform well?

2. I want to put the contrast cut Agitator wheels on. I am thinking about ordering a complete package, stock tires, wheels, rotors, etc online (discount) and then swapping the complete package. The stock chrome wheels are more expensive, I am hoping to sell the factory set for what I can buy the black set at a discounted price. When you buy the T&W plan, do they write down the serial number on the tire or anything? Will anybody know I changed T&W's?

3. What about when you wear out a tire, I am sure I have to replace it with a HD tire, but do I have to pay the dealer to do the work? Can I buy the tire and pay to have it mounted on the wheel only?

Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

Can't speak to anything but the tire, but the ESP does not cover a tire that is worn out by normal wear and tear...it will cover a nail in the tire, etc.  If you're buying the tire, you will be able to have it mounted wherever you want to.

I don't know about the non stock wheels...if the dealer installs them, they'd likely be covered, but I'd ask about that one.

Personally, I get the ESP with tire and wheel...with the 110 motor and all the electronics on the newer bikes, one item can cover the cost of the insurance plan.  You can shop around for prices though...the dealers make a killing on the ESP,and you don't have to purchase it from the dealer you buy the bike from.  I would at least try and negotiate the price of it with your dealer, or get them to knock off the dealer prep charges or something.

I've been accused of being a very agressive rider and I'm very happy with these new tires.

I have the tire and wheel coverage with my 7 yr. ESP.  I also have the Blade wheels from a 2009 SE Road Glide.  I had a tire replaced under the warranty and the wheel wasn't an issue.  But then, I'm in Nor Cal.......where modifications don't void the warranty (unless it's directly related to the failure), either. :nixweiss:

I wonder what would happen if you damaged a wheel? I guess it is up to the dealer to an extent? Your wheels are so different, where as I am just going to the black color...... Guess I will find out in the future.

Do yourself a favor and address these questions to the folks who control the answers.  They will be the ones who tell you after the fact "Oh, these aren't the stock wheels so they aren't covered".  Having one of us tell you otherwise won't help.  Have your dealer haul out the full contract provisions for the plan and any other literature they have explaining the inner workings of the plan.  Odds are there will be some verbage somewhere that explains exactly what is and isn't covered.  If not, call the plan administrator and have them give you an answer (in writing).

I had a front wheel bearing go out ,they replaced the bearing but not the wheel even though the dealer said the wheel should be replaced. Plus the chrome was coming off the brake and that wasn't covered. NO more extended warranty's for me

The ESP typically does not cover cosmetic items, so that doesn't surprise me.  If the bearing failure actually damaged the wheel, then they didn't have a valid excuse for denying that.  What was supposedly wrong with the wheel?

Right you are about the cosmetic issues. Extended doesn't cover your normal wear items either, ie brakes, tires, light bulbs.

As for your tire warranty pkg, Dunlops are a pretty good all around tire. If you puncture the tire and plan to use the warranty, there HAS to be at least 3/32 worth of tread. Otherwise, it's considered normal wear and will not be covered.

By the way, I work in the service dept for a dealer and have had to deal with these issues.

What about brake rotors, are they covered if they get warpped?
