Which Head Gaskets?
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:09:33 AM »

I have a '08 serk and am building the top end. I am aware that there are different versions of the head gaskets but which one have you used with success? Part #'s would be great!
Do any of you have any "pitfalls" that should be avoided or checked when this thing goes back together?
Thanks, Bill

My preference is Cometic MLS head gaskets.  Depending on your build, either .030 or .040 (thickness) gaskets.

(stock MOCO head gaskets are just over .040)

I've never experienced a failure of a Cometic head gasket.  They can be purchased directly from Cometic.

Was wondering if I would generate any performane gains and or rideability changing to a .030 gasket with a stock 110 w/ TW7-H drop in cams.  Read varying opinions here and was wondering if anybody has reported any gains or problems "pinging maybe" or maybe just not worth changing it out in the first place.  All opinions, experiences and test results are all greatly apprecited.

If you aren't doing anything else to the top end, I can think of absolutely no good reason to tear it down just to change head gaskets. If you do actually realize a very slight increase in output, it surely won't be worth the expense or any problems that might be created by the disassembly and reassembly.

instead of changing head gaskets for just for  the compression increase, you could get a plus 4 cam gear from bob woods for that 7h almost does the same thing,  ive done  it  less work too

If you end up pulling the head, you may want to know how far down your pistons are in the hole.   Once you know this you can correct the squish the way you want, by

A.  Getting a Zero Deck Height  (Cut Cylinders, or spin drop heads)
B.  Using the right headgasket for your build
C.  Knowing the CC of your head chambers
D.  Knowing the CC's of the pistons

With this information and cam intake timing you can pretty much target where your CCP will be at with the proposed build.
