Dumb Question, Stupid Thread - - Hey I'm bored
« on: March 21, 2011, 01:10:03 PM »

Why is it that if you wash your car in SoCal and rinse it off with the hose (connected to your home water supply) you get horrendous water spots BUT, if you go out in the rain and wash your car and let the rain rinse it off you don't get spots. What do they do ADD calcium to our drinking water out here ? One thing I love about spending my summers in Maine. I can wash and rinse without drying. The water does not leave spots.

Do you have a water softener in your home.

In my house, I have installed a whole house water filter, an iron filter and a water softener.  I installed an outside water faucet near my garage, and piped the water supply to this particular outside water faucet after my filters and softener.  Spot free rinse every time!   :2vrolijk_21:

Treated/spot free water is the number one reason to use the car wash. Rain water is evaporated water, the same as distilled in which only the water molecules evaporate leaving the minerals. Minerals can also be removed by water softeners which attract and collect the minerals in a tank of beads. The beads are periodically flushed in a salt brine solution to dissolve the minerals and then the brine is flushed into the sewer system. (Many SoCal municipalities have banned the use of water softening systems as the municipalities are responsible under the Clean Water Act for cleaning the brine before it can be expelled from the city system.) These same minerals cause the corrosion of your plumbing fixtures.

My city water comes from a well/aquifer that has holding lakes that replenish the water by trickling through the ground. Lots of calcium in the water.

The number two reason for using the car wash is it is better for the environment. Good for the plant and animal life. The local car washes by us, I believe but not positive, are required to filter and reuse much of the wash water. The waste water does go into the sewer system to be treated. We are ASKED to not wash cars in which the water can drain into the San Francisco Bay. (Driveways. Asked but not required.) Asked as well to control lawn irrigation runoff that contains lawn chemicals such as insecticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

Vinegar dissolves the spots.

WOW, I feel like I just had a personal visit with Bill Nye the Science Guy. My issue with the local car wash is that it really does a number on the rims of my sportscar. I don't care on the Ranger but the Spyder I do.

That's because I get very pi55ed off at the water spotting and me55ing up all my stuff. You should see what months of water sprinklers can do to your paint and glass. I had to clean out the garage so Carole's car could fit in there to prevent water spotting. (Shiiiitte) Carole requires that I squeegee and dry the shower after every use to prevent spotting. So I tried to do some research to find a solution.

Never had trouble with the wheels. Maybe you should try taking your bike to the car wash that uses a hand held wand instead of the drive through!  :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2: :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2: :nixweiss: :huepfenlol2:

I know, you said the Spyder.  ;D

Don't you just hate it when the recycled water sprays your bike overnight when your at a motel. The only thing that gets it off is Ducky or diluted vinegar...if your lucky.  Doc

Your right, by the time it gets to us its been through acres of farm land, pastures, sewer treatment plants, nuclear waste sites... and make water spots on your bike. What little bit gets to Mexico is where most of our produce and beer comes from.  :drink:  Doc

I drink Sierra Springs bottled water that is delivered to my home in cases of 2qt jugs. Given the state of the water industry, it's probably bottled from a tap in the next town over.  :-\

For 5 months a year I drink Sebago Lake (Maine) water. Among the top 10 most pure public water supplies in the world.

I get Lake Erie water. Tastes like carp crap.  Low in minerals though. The filter on the fridge dispenser makes it palatable.
