XM Reception: How to IMPROVE?
« on: August 03, 2011, 11:10:59 AM »

With a Zumo 665 and the antenna installed on a SERG per instructions, and the SERG has the chrome windshield trim, the XM reception is a real crap shoot.  I'm not looking to replace the antenna with a dildo looking outside the fairing one.  Will I get better reception by moving it elsewhere under the fairing?  Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

inside the fairing will not give you any decent reception, we have had to move it to behind windshield on inner fairing. common issue

Mine is between my windshield pouches stuck to the bar below them. Can't even see it unless you are looking for it.

I understand about your OCD ("Obsessive Chrome Disorder") but mine is under the fairing and I get fine reception.  The volume compared to FM or a CD, however is another issue.  It is just not as loud and pulling it out did not seem to help.  Nor did going to the dealer for the latest download.   I have noted that my friend who plays his XM through his nav system gets his signal slightly later than me (a fraction of a second).  If we play the same channel and ride tandem, we get a surround sound effect, sort of.   :huepfenlol2:   :huepfenlol2:

I put the antenna on the left speaker inside the fairing, works good.

My XM reception is pretty good unless I'm in the mountains. I have not had the front fairing off. Dumb question: What does the XM antenna look like? Not sure if it would be worth moving.

I also have XM issues. I installed a non-Harley XM radio on my 2005 Ultra and had excellent reception with the antenna mounted on the top of the radio as close to the front edge as possible. It worked very well.

I have had issues the my 2010 Ultra CVO with the factory XM installed.  The signal was lost frequently, even out in wide open spaces.  I removed the original antenna (mounted under the windshield trim) and replaced it with another antenna mounted, again on the front top of the radio.  Signal is now almost always three bars strong.  Even with three bars, the radio becomes silent quite often.  This weekend, while on the America's 911 ride to NYC, the XM stoped working completely.  Had three bars reception, but the message continued to say "LOADING" and never did start working.  I shut off the radio, back on, and off several times with the same results "Loading."  Later in the day, it started working again!  The HD XM radio's SUCK!  I have two other vehicles with XM and have no such problems.

I'm going to tell HD to remove both the the XM and Navigation modules from my bike.  They are both next to useless to me.  I'll mount my own XM & GPS units like I did on my previous bike.

Mounted the new XM antenna that I got off the XM site, for about $35, on the right mirror stem.  Reception is about 99% better!
