Holy Buffeting Batwing!
« on: March 25, 2011, 01:20:42 PM »

I am considering buying a Hoppe Vanillazilla batwing for the '07 SERK and have not found much in people's posting on these, Dragonfly, etc. about what it did for wind protection.  Obviously the stock SERK windshield was cosmetic, so I replaced it with a Clearview.  That was better overall, but I still get a LOT of buffeting, to the point that it's a tough decision between air blast or the headache inducing vibration.  I've even turned around a few miles into a six hundred mile ride to put it back in the garage.  So for those who have had either the large RK shield or Clearview and experienced buffeting then switched to one of the aftermarket batwings - did it help?  Enough to switch only for the added protection?  I don't need a stereo, so it would be a plain one, but before I spend the eight hundred or so it would be nice to know if it's worth it.  I've considered those ugly boat anchor looking fork delectors, but with the auxilary lights I have about a third of the metal would have to be removed for them to fit (aside from being hideously ugly to begin with).

I have one on my 2004 FLTSCI.  It has the 200 Watt Stereo system and painted to match.  I will say that it is a little heavy with all the goodies on it from Hoppie.  But the music is good to have and it does help in the wind deflecting.  I enjoy it more so with the short windshield on it and for the looks it has done for the bike.  No pictures of it currently as i am at work (lunch) reading the forum.   Will post pictures later.   But as far as function, I would rather have it than the big old windshield!

I have the Hoppe "Quadzilla".
I absolutely love it. after a year of testing, I liked it so well, I sent it out to be painted to match the bike, and very rarely take it off.(although it can be removed in less then 1 minute)
of course I only have the little stubby dark shield on it, I don't find any buffeting at all.

I have a Dragonfly and have been very happy with it.  Good wind buffetting with standard windshield.  Stereo...I always use Satellite..sounds great at 70mph+.

Those that have never had a Faring and then suddenly put one on soon discover the sheer joy of riding in a bubble and still being able to experience the feeling of being outside. Then they install a radio or at least can hear it when that happens the wind in your face and hair no longer matters and then you realize you have grown much older  :'(.
