Done with the pipes and headers, now to tuning
« on: April 10, 2011, 04:05:17 AM »

Ok guys,
So finally I received my 4 inch Rinhehart Slipnons and VH power chamber header. Installation is next Tuesday. I will also install the SE pro race tuner. I am no big shot on tuning so do you think I should do it myself or have it done by HD technician? Is it difficult? Any opinions?

Any good tuners in Egypt? :nixweiss:     Better have someone who knows what they are doing to attempt that one.

You might be at their mercy then.   Or you may find a download from someone on here.  Good luck.  Just ask around or look at some of the posts.

without a dyno available I think I would use tne TTS Mastertune or even the Thundermax system. Most likely end up with a better tune and be easier in the process. JMHO

Or the new Revolution Performance EMS system....install it and go--no dyno needed and my bike runs great. There are a few threads and the posts have been very positive. For your situation, it would seem to be a good choice with no competant tuners available.

MJ, Bubblehead and Stu, thanks a lot guys, appreciate your input. However, a couple of buddies who are quiet technical advised me not to install any race tuner since I basically changed nothing. The bike came with the Hi Air flow filter and 2-1-2 exhaust. I still have the same setup with power chamber VH header and Rineharts. Any inputs on that?

The factory header that you are removing has a cat in it for emmissions...when you change pipes you will no longer have the cat so the exhaust will be more free flowing. While this may not be as major a change as you think, the bike comes from the factory already running lean. Changing the exhaust will make it run leaner--you could probalby get away without the tuner, but adding it will make the bike run MUCH better and cooler since the extra fuel you will adding will have a cooling affect on the motor.

This is a basic Fact!  Ride any stock Harley with a cat for 1000 miles pull the plugs. What you will see are snow white insulators, anybody who has been around gasoline engines will tell you a white insulator is too lean. I did it with my 11 Krypto. I put in Fullsac 2.25 baffles and XIEDs now the insulators are a light caramel color. Much better  I plan on the Fullsac ceramic header and TTS, maybe cams just haven't pulled the trigger yet. If all you are doing is mufflers than just install some XIEDs.  it fools the ECU into thinking the AFR is way to lean (which it is) and fattens it up from 14.7 to 13.8  That will cover you till you can sort out the tune/dyno issue.  Its the quick cheap FI equivalent of changing jets in a carb (Old School).  If you do a header without a cat you really need a Tuner/Dyno.

The stock set-up is too lean to begin with, which as a by-product of that is excessive heat. You will be making the bike even leaner by opening up the exhaust. Which in turn will increase the heat even further. So at the very least get yourself a Xied module and better yet a good tuner like the TTS or others mentioned above and cool that sucker down a bit. On a side note these tuners will allow you to remove the throttle lag that is built into the stock set-up. The Xied system will not do this but you could add the Vance and Hines box to fix it.

Bubblehead & Wayne, thank you for your thorough explanation however I am at loss here. What is XIED? If I have already bought the SE Pro Race tuner, should I put it in OR should I try to sell it and get TTS or the likes? Sorry guys for the dumb questions but I am new to this tuning matter.

Speaking as if it was me, I would sell the SERT and buy a TTS Mastertune.  The Sert is a good tuner just not user friendly and without a dyno it will be hard to get the most out of it. With the TTS unit you put in the map that is closest to your set-up and then you can hook up a lap top and do V tune rides to really dial it in. If your pipes have both sets of bungs on them then you could also use the Thundermax as it can constantly tune to the current conditions. find out more about the TTS below. good luck with the bike.

I've used the SERT, then TTS with fullsac cores and header and Steve's tuning map and most recently have gone to the Rev Performance EMU setup. These have been on my 2010 SESG. Stock cams. Heavy Breather. By far the best results have been with the Rev Performnance product. I still can't believe how great my bike's running now. The down side of the Ref Perf kit is that you need the bungs changed out to use the Bosch O2 sensors. Also you have to send your ECU to them to have them do some magic with it. I think it was well worth the money and delays. I wish I had known about it before I blew the money on the SERT and TTS.

I used the TTS on my '10..but switched over to the rev perf EMS for the '11 and very pleased. No need to fine tune or expensive dyno runs. Install and ride!
