Lost my cherry
« on: May 01, 2006, 09:39:11 PM »

Well, it happened yesterday - my first (and I hope only crash).  I'll be 61 tomorrow and riding off and on (mostly on) since I was 15 and never down when moving.  Yeah, I've dropped a couple while standing still or almost so but never when riding.  Anyway, I'm an MSF coach and had beginner riding class this weekend.  Site I teach at had just re-sealed the asphalt on the range a couple months ago and everything seemed OK.  But on one exercise, number 13, a decreasing radius turn, the other coach ran the demo.  She ran outside the boundaries twice and stopped to say that maybe I should ride the demo since it felt an little slippery to her.  I gave a quick look at the area and seemed OK, but mid-way in the curve (at the inside) and maximum lean angle the bike totally lost traction and I did a hard low side crash.  Big raspberry on my left hip and pretty good sprained shoulder and total embarrassment.  One of the students who seems knowledgable in construction came over and saw the problem.  Looks like a bad spot in the pavement where the contractor must have used some liquid sealer, tar or something.  Noticeable once you stood right over it but definitely could not see it while riding.  Anyway, just goes to show that no amount of experience or expertise can keep you from harm always.  Be careful out there.

Good to see your injuries are to pride as much or more than body.  How beat up is the bike?

Yep, it was.  That's what I tell my students, don't sweat it, it's not your bike.  It is truly amazing in that of the whole range the one defect was right on the inside of the left hand sweeper.  But as I pointed out to the class - I did have the perfect line - started on the outside and you could see the scrape from the bike - all down the inside line of the curve.  Just goes to show that if you lose traction due to poor road surface there is not a lot you can do to recover.

It was Mr. Richards who was in the Tree - perhaps looking for a "Rollin' Stone"...  :D
