08 FLHTCUSE 3 ticking noise
« on: April 04, 2011, 07:10:32 AM »

I customized my FLHTCUSE 3 that i imported out of the US to Europe with 5000 miles on it .
Went for a total black look and technical only changed the exhaust to BUB true dual and SE airfilter .
Because of the risk of overheating taught it was a good idea to do a Dyno run to have it run perfect .
Did the run and left there with a " ticking " noise .
A trip to the dealer did not result in a solution so asking some race experts and the said it's a valve related problem .
So changed out the hydraulic lifters just in case the dyno wrecked one by too high rpm's but after changing them no difference .
Back to the dealer where the checked it over but the think it could be a crank bearing !!!
Just because the heads have a bad reputation took of the heads again and a local engine rebuilder took out the valves for me to check the valve guides .
No problem there but then noticed the decompression valve from the rear head was in loose and you can see that it lost compression there .
Ordered the gaskets to rebuild and will post the result here , hoping i got this thing fixed this time .

When starting the noise was " almost gone " so gone riding and rode about 500 kilometers but the sound is back ( without the extra sound from the rear head where the valve lost compression ) .

Seems to get get worse when oil is hotter and oil pressure a Little lower .

On mechanics advice changed the oil from synthetic to old skool 20W50 and same result as cold synthetic , a little betterwhen cold .

Taking it apart again and carefully looking for a problem in primairy again , oil pump or cam bearings .

Dealer thinks the crankshaft bearing could be the problem so working down and when finding nothing on the way the dealer will change the bearings and check the crank for balance .

Keep you guys posted but sadly no easy fix for this one .

If you haven't already...........GO BACK TO SYNTHETIC NOW.......... by far a superior oil

Thanks for the advice , 20W50 was for testing purposes only .

Taking the whole engine apart now , already showing abnormal wear on the crank where it sits in the oil pump .

Not looking good so far but will run synthetic again when he's fixed .

If your shop is already in the cam chest, make sure they check the crank run-out.  The '07's & '08's had a known issue with cranks having excessive run-out due to poor quality parts. The multi-piece, pressed assembly could "scissor" and result in the whole thing being out of alignment and balance.  An excessive wear pattern in the oil pump and cam plate are indications on this condition.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip , ticking noise in mine is a bad crankshaft so it seems .

Engine is out after discovering abnormal wear in cam plate ( grooves ) also where the flywheel sits in the cam plate and the oil pump is i affected .

Identical to this ( look like pictures of mine  :-[ ) :

We are doing the work ourselves due to a friend being a fine mechanic but wondering what the Harley dealer will say tomorrow .
