J&M Elite Helmet Headset
« on: April 12, 2011, 01:49:09 AM »

Anyone cut up their $380 or $500 Arai helmet to install the Elite 629 Series headset?

Seems like a good idea..... and a bad one.....

Indulge my ignorance for a moment please...do you have to cut or drill your helmet to install this headset? If that's so then I'm definitely going wireless. Their BT headseat just clamp on...

On the Sheoi-Qwest..... Have to cut(with X-acto) the inner-ear molded plastic into the shape of speakers -- there is a space molded into the plastic for speakers, but the J&M are larger in diameter, and need a little trim.  Then carefully and with X-acto, trim the foam material out in the same shape down to the shell membrane.  Next, you have to cut our the "peanut" shape of the Mic INTO THE chin bar-- the area is a molded dense foam about 1/4' thick and covered with a vinyl material -- us some pry-bar (popsicle stick) to lift the foam away from helmet shell to get the  mic seat into and under the foam.

The Arai -RQ takes the same work but the ear pieces are not as clearly defined.

All-in all..... I tried to do the "pry" step on the chin bar before any cutting and did not feel comfortable.  Risking $900 worth of helmets to save $140 when done by experts who do it day-in, day-out.....would be a bad choice.

So, I will send the helmets on Monday
