Drive belt tension
« on: May 05, 2011, 01:30:27 PM »

How critical is this, really?  I have not paid close attention to this and see that I am running a little on the loose side - not bad but not within spec.  Talking to trijetdoc who is doing his 1k on his new ruse and doublechecked the spec - it is 3/8 to 7/16 measured mid-way with 10 lbs pressure.  Whoa, that is only 1/16 tolerance.  Compared to the new crank runout spec that is a tight tolerance, lol. :P

Jerry...I don't think I'd be concerned about 1/8" loose, or even 3/16"...much beyond that and I'd probably adjust it.  I don't think you're going to be dumping the clutch after revving to 4K anytime soon, are you?  ;)  I know J would be bonking you on the helmet if you did... :huepfenlol2:

My rule of thumb has always been that if you can twist the belt a full 90 degrees, it's loose. Anything less is fine.

Also on the newer bikes that have metric axles, make sure you tighten the nut down HARD. Recommended TQ setting for the cone nut is 95-105ftlbs

You guys have confirmed my thinking.  I think the way I've run them is just fine.  Heck I have 77k on the jester and the belt is original and looks pristine.

I do pay close attention to the torque values however and am scrupulous in following them on all the critical fasteners for sure.  :2vrolijk_21:

Hey TC - do me a favor please.  Look at pulley on the rear wheel.  Look at it from the rear of the bike and position yourself directly behind it.  Trijetdoc and I noticed that on our RUSEs the belt rides all the way outboard and touches the lip of the pulley.  The lip has slightly 'polished' the edge of the belt.  On the 07 jester it is more in the middle of the pulley.  Don't know that this is a problem or an issue - just different and wondering if 'they are all that way', lol.

If it's metric, shouldn't the torque setting be in Newton/Meters?  :huepfenjump3:  :mango:  :orange:  :huepfenjump3:

If the wheel is not exactly true, the belt will have a tendency to "walk" to one side of the pulley or the other. As you have described on the RUSEs, my guess is that the left side of the rear axle is slightly forward of the right side, having the rear wheel skewed more to the right.  This may be so slight that it makes no noticeable feel when riding or even effect to the tire wear but it exist.  Sounds like the 07 jester is running true.

That sounds reasonable but there is really no practical way to adjust only one side of the axle and I would not try in any case.

Jerry...looked at mine this AM...it appears to be running in the middle of the pulley.   :nixweiss:  As a side note, my belt moves more than 3/8" too...probably more like 1/2".

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh

Somebody at Snap-on or Sears will hear you and the next thing you know it will be

I don't need to buy a new torque wrench just cause H-D Inc. can't stop themselves from producing motorcycles with two types of thread standards.
