knocking noise out of primary 2011 FLHX (103)
« on: May 17, 2011, 02:02:26 PM »

New 2011 FLHX, equiped with the 103 power pack package.
Have around 400 soft miles.
I hear a knocking noise at idle out of the primary, only hear when engine is warm.
I have not heard this on the 110, or previous 88.
Dealer stated the automatic tensioner needs to be jumped up a link, so we did the hopping to do that.
Dealert also stated it is time to start riding it hard!!
Noise is still there...............Any thoughts on what this might be.
Shifting is not easy and smooth as well.
Could it be the fluids that the bike is shipped with, and might be resolved with the new synthetic's ( Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc), when this is required at the 1000 mile service?

Thanks,

I highly doubt a different kind of fluid would make any difference. It isn't clear whether your dealer took the outer primary cover off and forced the tensioner to tighten up. If he did, did he do an inspection and notice anything?

Not that it matters but that's the same story I got here from the dealer as mine does the same thing. Not sure if its the primary or something in the transmission on mine as it goes away if you pull the clutch in on mine. The dealer say ride it and it will go away but it hasn't yet.

I had the same knocking noise and would notice it when I stopped for gas or pulled in to the house after riding in the summer on hot days. Anyway after changing motors and going to the SE Comp Assembly it is gone but I really don't know what change made it go away. It just one more thing that I don't have to worry about. Hope it goes away for you.

Primary Compensator Clank, is what my dealer called it. HD says its normal. Mine does it with the SE compensator. Some do some dont. My dealer told me that its the touring line that does it. just random bikes do it.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news or be all doom & gloom but.......that sounds very familiar to what we heard on my wife's 09 Street Glide (96").  Took it in and at first the dealership said they don't hear any unusual noise.  I explained that my wife had put 30k miles on a bike that was 18 months old.....we know what normal is for it....open it up and find out what the problem is.  The crank run out was at .015.....the MoCo sent a new motor with her VIN number stamped in the new cases. :2vrolijk_21:

Oh, it's just random bikes that do this, but trust us, it's normal.

That is exactly the kind of doublespeak Bullchit that causes me to love those wonderful lying bastards at H-D so much.  If it's normal then they should all do it.  If it's normal and you have a bike that doesn't do it, that means your bike isn't normal.  I guess the guys who don't have this noise should take their bikes in immediately to have Harley make them "normal".  BS!

BTW, I'm not exactly convinced that this is compensator noise, especially the ones where the noise disappears as soon as you disengage the clutch.  When you disengage the clutch, the only thing that stops moving is the transmission input shaft.  The compensator is still compensating, and the primary chain adjuster is still adjusting, if you know what I mean.

When my wife pulls up beside me at the light I hear a similar noise from her 2011 SG 103pkg. She is in first with the clutch pulled in, of course and I hear some noise like that my bikes do not make. Next time she is over at the dealer I will have them check into it and report what the story line.

I really like that normal not normal stuff from Jerry.LOL
