103 engine build and heads
« on: September 27, 2010, 10:38:09 PM »

ok,say you build a 96 to 103,or 107 engine with a 2 into 1 exhaust,se air cleaner kit, good low end torque motor with a se 204,26 andrews, woods 6,or what ever cam for the low end torque.how much head work,if any, would really be needed to get a good torque motor to run its best from say 2000 to 4500 rpm.most places have a mild setup and a all out,1200$ or so head work.with 07 and later heads would they make enough difference to warrent the expense of say5 to 600 $ or 1200$?how much extra power could one expect to get over stock 07 or later heads?

We are doing more and more of what we call a "Blueprint" just for this purpose. This uses stock valves, Serdi seat cuts, new bronze guides, heads CCd, squish grooves added, and mild port work.
103" with SE cast flat top pistons will be the best bang for the buck and a SE204 will work fine too just for what you are desiring. Get the parts from a discount dealer and a good tune and pipe and away you go. If you want more everywhere an upgrade, if it is in the budget would be a Wood TW555 cam at about $100 above the 204.

With a good set of 1.900" valve heads, you'll see a flow increase of approx 25 cfm, @ 10" over OE, and a 1.940" intake will show another 10-12 over that, and the cc's in the chamber would be within 1/2 cc of one another.
The ability for those heads to "gulp"(had a girlfriend like that once, hehe) right off the seat, at low lifts, will be very evident during flow testing.
How much more is semi-tough to answer, but it'll hit harder, have much more in the middle, and be able to continue to march out into the upper rpm range, resulting in muych more power under the curve.
From what several tuners have told us, that they have witnessed the engine running cooler as well. :)

I had a SE204 in my FLH and hated it. Not the performance, but the noise. After install, I had a very loud "whop" sound that the dealer said was the intake valve closing while the cylinder was filling.  Whatever it was, it was louder than the exhaust at highway speeds. Switched to an Andrews 54 and the sound went away. Now I have quiet performance.

That noise has NEVER been present when we have had those here. Odd.
Me thinks your dealer was pulling your you-know-what.
