low octain fuel
« on: July 08, 2011, 03:15:11 PM »

Just got back from a great ride in the high country in Colorado, and had some problems finding high octane gas. In some of the the highest areas I could find was premium 87 octane. In the steep mountains I had a pretty good pinging if I tried to push it, it was easier to go slow and enjoy the scenery.
I wish I could have found some octane booster, but as usual none of the local stores carried it. Next time I will take it with me.
Does anyone have a good brand that I can buy to keep in the saddlebag for the next high ride?

I also just returned from Colorado. Rode up Mt. Evans two up grossly overloaded 2010 CVO red/slate.  You do not need gas additive.  Try keeping your RPM over 2000 when pulling a grade.  Your engine electronics will keep engine detononation from  occurring.  At high altitudes the thin air effectively reduces your compression ratio and extra octane doesn't help.  As long as you keep oil at recommended levels, do not lug, and do not exceed redline, you cannot hurt your motor. Enjoy the ride.

Was There last year, fly and Ride, Stock Rental Electra Glide ran fine in the mountains with regular fuel. As already stated, if you dont lug the motor ECM will do a decent job of sorting things out.

Larry, it's very hard to find any fuel over 89 in oklahoma, where i do a great deal of riding, and when riding in 100 plus temps my bike hates less then 93 rated so I know exactly what you're saying - I keep some octane booster in the saddlebag, not sure the brand, my local hd (texoma hd) keeps it on the counter.  it works great, is in a thick pliable 1-2 oz packet - these things will not leak or burst, make sure you have a sharp knife to open them.  The next time I go in to hd i'll try to remember to see what brand.

BTW, for those that might suggest, I don't lug my motor; fact is there are places where you can not get quality fuels and after owning many big inch and stroked v-twin motors - well, they require a higher octane.

Hope this helps Larry, Mac...

I try to keep a small bottle just in case...brand I usually pick up seems to be called '103+ Octane Boost'.  spyder

Thanks for the info on the products.
Just for info I did keep up the rpm, but still the pinging was there- not bad unless I pushed it. Not sure if the ECM was tuned to the top end of the spark advance or not. Maybe I should have the spark sensor checked. I've tried some of the booster in the past with good results.
So again I thank you for your input.
