Road King GPS Install
« on: April 04, 2006, 11:18:32 PM »

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has installed a GPS unit on their Road King including some pics. Particularly the GPS brand/model, accompanying mounting hardware, and where it was fitted to the bike (maybe on the handlebars or rear of windshield etc). Also I've heard that some units have electrical problems due to the vibration from the bike?

I'm evaluating whether to pick something up for primary use in the car but also something that can be used as a "detachable" accessory for the longer trips on the bike.

I ordered lowrance iway 500c should recieve thursday. cant help much on the install yet. I wanded to do car and bike as you do. I ordered from buydig.com last sunday for $593 to the door. the reason i tell you that is because I looked today and it is selling for $799 with $100 mailin rebate. bet if you call they will still sell for 593. I ordered this unit for two reasons. first, it has 5" screen (cant see as well as I used to) second, It had capability to plug into the back of radio (if radio is so equiped) and announce over music the turns and other info.(I know it will on hd radios because my friend demoed his for me)The reason i ordered from buydig is because they claim that it comes with a window suction cup mount and a motorcycle mount as well as two extions one short and one long. that way I can leave the mounts in both car and bike and transfer gps unit back and forth. motorcycle mount did not have a picture . I presume it will have 1"mount and I have 1 1/4 bars my be problem will update when i recieve. all of the other web cites did not have handlebar mount. It seems most of the other guys have garmin. I will let them tell you why. good luck Dan

Here's some pics of the GPS install on my SERK  using the SAENG (WW.SAENG.COM) mount, same mounting base with a different baseplate can be used for radar detector, etc.

I hard wired it into the auxiliary power circuit and ran the cable under the fuel tank and through the nacelle. Used a 4-pin Deutsch plug for the connections. Works fine so far. Here's a backside view:

You can't go wrong with the Garmin 27xx series .  You can use it in the car or mounted on the handlebars.  Remember our bars are larger than standard when you order the mount. Sometimes glare is an issue.  You can purchase aftermarket glare shields as well.
