Adding a detachable rack to a tour pak.
« on: June 18, 2011, 07:12:01 PM »

I am looking at a couple of tour paks and both came off Ultras. Will the detachable rack bolt up to the tour pak off an ultra without drilling more holes in the bottom? (2009 and newer)

If the tour pack is the newer style, it'll bolt right up to the quick release rack.....both solo or two up. :2vrolijk_21:

To confirm what JCZ said, if the tour paks are from '09 and newer Ultras, they'll have the same bolt pattern HD uses for the '09 and newer detachable tour pak racks, solo and two-up which will install the same on an '09 or newer CVO Touring model as they do on '09 and newer non-CVO models.

Ok, what if I buy a tour pak made before 2009 and want to add a 2009 detachable rack, can I make it work also?

Sure; just use the detachable rack for the '09 and newer models as the template for drilling holes in the bottom of the tour pak/metal plate.  Many have done so successfully.

For cosmetic reasons, the '06 or so tour paks have essentially a flat bottom; tour paks from '05 or so and older have a heavily molded bottom.  The former will sit flatter on the '09 and newer rack, while the older tour pak with the molded bottom will sit on the on the molded bottom.  The difference in the bottoms may not be a big deal; also, the newer tour pak will also have the wrap around side marker lights--i.e. the side marker lights will wrap around the rear bottom edge slightly.

Good luck with your project.

Carl

PS:  If you are going to prep the tour pak for paint, let me know if you have any questions; I've done two with excellent results--disassembly, sanding, removal of the Ultra light bar and its disassembly, etc.
