2011 Ultra Road Glide GPS
« on: June 08, 2011, 08:37:20 AM »

Prior to purchasing my new bike I owned a Garmin 665 (with xm radio, xm traffic, and xm weather/Doppler radar). I truly enjoy this unit with all the features.

The ultra came with the Garmin 660 hard wired into the handle bars, and XM radio built into the radio not the Garmin. The ultra xm radio has an electromagnetic antenna wired into the radio. The 665 came with a rare earth magnet type antenna (a GXM 40). These 2 antennas are not compatible and will only work with their corresponding radios.
Have any of you made a 665 work with the Weather and Doppler on the Ultra road Glide, and how did you do it? Hopefully not wit externally mounting the GXM 40 antenna (I don’t care for that look).
I also like the chromed stock hardware that the 660 is mounted to. I would prefer to use it also.

If you just recently purchased your SEURG, the Garmin mount that is attached to the chrome handlebar mount should be the new 660/665 mount and will be compatible (except for the parts that require the external antenna that came with the 665.)  Unfortunately, the only way to get that functionality back would be to install the Garmin antenna.  All other 665 functions should work as advertised.

I just bought a new CVO 11 RoadGlide Ultra.  In the deal the dealer swapped out the 660 for the 665.  I now see that I need to install the Garmin antenna as the radio antenna will not work.  In this deal and one of the reasons I did it is I also have a 10 CVO StreetGlide.  I want to put Weather and Traffic on the 665 and be able to take it from bike to bike.  I bought the additional harness and interface for the radio on the StreetGlide and had it installed along with the Gamin antenna that came with the 665.  (I realize I now have to buy another antenna-) but after installing the antenna on the RoadGlide with the Weather and Traffic work on both bikes with one subscription?

I believe the XM subscription is tied to the antenna and not the GPS.  Of course this is a major bummer.  I think it would be nice to buy ONE subscription for the device and use it everywhere.

You are correct.  The antenna is also the XM receiver that possesses the serial number that the subscription is based on.  If you can move the antenna from bike to bike with the 665 you're good to go on one subscription, but if you buy another XM antenna rig, you'll also have to purchase another subscription, which will be considerably less than the initial one.
