Need help!
« on: March 14, 2012, 05:24:00 PM »

Hey everyone,

I need some help figuring this out.  Is is possible to put on Vance and Hines Short Shot pipes on a 2009 FXSTSSE3 that has the stock heavy breather and not have a SERT  put on.  If so what kind of performance issues will there be.  I just had my bike delivered and asked the guy who delivered where the turner is and he said the dealer didn't give him anything.  Tried to call the dealer and they have not returned my call.  When I was looking at this bike before I bought it I asked if there was a SERT done and was told yes.  I am stating to think they pulled a fast one on me.  I took it out for a quick ride today(it's only 40 out so it was cold) and I noticed when I slowed down a couple of times I heard a little pop.  I never had this issue with my 2006 Dyna that had a SERT on it. Is there a way to look on the bike to tell if there was anything done to it.  Thanks in advance..

If it has been tuned with SERT then the seller should have the little orange box to give to you.  If it hasn't been tuned for a freer breathing exhaust system then it's going to run even leaner than it was programmed by the factory and possibly run hotter on you.  I'm not sure how to check if it's been retuned with a SERT but I'm sure someone here on the site will have an answer.  Does it pop on deceleration when you close the throttle rapidly?  Does it pop on decel when you slowly close the throttle?  What grade of gas have you been using, 93, 89, etc?  Were you provided all the maintenance records when you acquired it?  Even with the SERT, if it was not tuned with your existing exhaust pipes or just tuned to some generic map, you could still have a deceleration pop on occasion.  If it's doing it regularly, I might suspect a too rich fuel mixture setting on your map.

When I had V & H 2-2 big radius pipes installed with SERT and dyno tune at the dealership, they gave me the SERT box back.  It cost roughly $450.  It's married to your bike now and you will need it to do any tuning adjustments in the future.  I'm starting to believe that they just put on the pipes and no tune.  Dealer will tell you that you can do that as the ECM will recalibrate the fuel / air ratio to compensate for the freer breathing exhaust.  This might be so to a certain extent but it will not be as good as a tuning device and a good dyno tune by someone familiar with that device, be it SERT or TTS or whatever.  If the guy doing the tuning doesn't know what he's doing then who knows how it will end up.

Thanks for the input.  I finally got a call from the dealer and they are going to pick it up today.  I was able to find out that nothing has been done to the bike that they know so that explains the performance issues.  Should I be asking for a Stage 1 upgrade and a SERT?  Or if a stage 1 was done should I still get a SERT?  Thanks again for all the help.

Update!  I talked to the dealer today and they are going to do a stage 1 and a SERT at no charge and the bike should be ready for pick up tomorrow.  It's going to be 80 here in Mass and I am going crazy.  This is great news and I am very happy and glad the dealer has decided to do this for me.  Can't wait!!

Stage 1 and SERT, at no charge from the dealer? That's what I call a win-win situation!  Way to go! Let us know how it runs when you get'er back.

My ride home from the dealer was great! This bike is running like it should.  Love this bike and I am looking forward to many miles...
