A nice suprise in the mens room.
« on: July 24, 2011, 09:40:01 PM »

So we're at the HD dealer in Irvine, CA. to see the 2012s. I go into the mens room to take care of business and something catches my eye. It's a flyer hanging at eye level placed in spot where a man is sure to stand and see it. It's advertising extended warranty contracts for bikes currently OUT of warranty. So I go out on the floor and find a salesman and ask him about it. The criteria is the bike must be less than 12 years old and have less than 75K on the clock. The owner must have the bike inspected by the service department first. If the service department gives the OK, the owner has the choice of buying several programs ranging from one year at just over $1,100 to five years at $2,200. You can also add tires and wheel coverage for an additional cost. The salesman said if you are stranded the policy covers rooms and meals during the repair. After my LAST bike which ate stators every 18 to 20K, I am seriously considering this.

Anybody with an expired warranty purchase one yet?

Mark I don't have one, however when my ESP was getting ready to end last month I got a flyer from dealer probably similar to the same thing you saw... I could purchase another ESP for my bike. After contemplating this for a hot second I decided the best thing to do was put the money in savings where I could draw interest on it vs. having to deal with an ESP company that may deny my warranty claim for some ridiculous reason having no bearing on the failed part. JMHO.

I purchased the HD extended warranty when I got my (used) FLHRSEI2.  It's about 8 years old, with 18,000 miles on it.  I was charged $1700 for two years though.  I read through the brochure first, and it looked like a pretty safe bet as they seem to cover just about everything.

At least it gave me some peace of mind when I purchased a used bike, not knowing it's service history.

The good news is that since I bought it from a friend I know the service history of the bike. But given my recent history with my last bike which always seemed to break down on a Sunday night outside of some national park a good long tow away from the closest dealer, I'm always looking for peace of mind.

My thoughts in general......I feel the extended warranty pays for itself in piece of mind.  If you're a rider (somebody that puts 12k a year or more on the clock) then the odds are pretty good that it will pay for itself financially as well.  At least that's been my experience on my last three baggers.

On two of those baggers, it paid for itself two times over!  I also happen to think that the odds are greater that you're going to need it on a bagger than say a Dyna or Softail model simply because of all the electronics (stereo, lighting, cruise control, etc. on a bagger).  Couple that along with all the new features that could potentially have failures down the road (ipod, ABS brakes, heat management system, etc. etc.) and it makes the extended warranty an even smarter buy if you plan to keep the bike.

For those that don't plan to keep the bike more than two years but less than five or six years.....if you are a rider (putting miles on) and you don't have the extended warranty and it's past the factory warranty you may have a difficult time trying to sell it and the dealership certainly is going to take advantage of that if you trade it in.

So, for me, it's a no brainer.....we have the seven year (5 yr. extended) extended warranty (service agreement) on both bikes and we ride with piece of mind! :2vrolijk_21:   Mark, I suggest you take full advantage of that offer because you hang on to your bikes till the wheels are falling off. ;D   You may give Jenny a call to see if they offer the same option.....20% discount on something like this is huge! :2vrolijk_21:

Great idea! Where is Jenny now? I know she's moved around. Do we have a discount code or just mention CVO.com?

Don't even have to mention CVO.....just mention the 20% discount is all I asked about when bought some stuff from here for Terrie's bike awhile back.

That's a big benefit right there!
Which dealer is Jenny working these days? Is it still Tri-County?

Mark, Jenni isn't anywhere right now.  Hasn't landed a new spot anywhere yet.  The "new Jenni" at Tri-County, however, is named Rebecca and is doing everything for us that Jenni did.  She's also very pleasant and helpful to work with as Jenni was.

Rebecca at Tri-County has been great.  My original service plan cost me $900 for three years beyond the HD warranty.   Last month the clutch was making noise.  Dealer had to replace the clutch hub and clutch assembly.  The bill came to $850.  It was very nice to pay only the $50 deductible.  If anything else happens to the bike in the next 2 years plus, I have made a profit.  I agree with JC about the piece of mind...

I bought the 7 year extended warranty with tire and wheel for a discount for around $1,500 I think. All I got was piece of mind, as I never had a claim. Toward the end I was actually kind of hoping something would go wrong. Your mileage may vary.
