Replacement factory seat. Are they different?
« on: July 11, 2011, 11:04:28 AM »

I just got my bike back from the dealer for some mods and also warranty work. One of the items was the original seat had a couple of places where the threads were pulling away and some "white" was showing through. They replaced it under warranty with a new one. This seat looks fine but feels a lot softer. Not as supportive.

The reason I ask is because a friend of mine had his seat replaced on his 08 FLHTCUSE and the replacement seat weighed less than half of what the original did and it smashed down to the pan after a short time. I did not get to "feel" the weight of my original.

I was just curious if this has happened on any bike swapping the factory out for a replacement under warranty?

Rob, check to see if the seat part number that was current when the bike was purchased now has a later revision.  If so they changed something.

I had my seat replaced a month ago for the same reason. It looks & feels the same as the original. The dealer said they would replace it one time as a good will gesture.  Does anyone know exactly how long  & if the seat is covered under warranty? The seat part # 54112-11. It  is probably located under the seat. It  should match the rider & tour pak backrests.

I had my '09 SERG seat replaced with just a few months left on my 24 month warranty, so I'm guessing for 24 months.

Rob, when I had my second seat installed for my '09 SERG, it had no padding on the nose and was ONLY bulging due to the vinyl holding its shape.  It was truly a very poorly made seat replacement.  It was the same cover etc, just very poorly made and the foam was not where it should have been.

I lived with this for about 6 months and then went back to the MoCo for another seat.  This time I did the '11 SESG seat and it was a lot better in padding and holds its shape a lot better than any of my '09 seats did.

If this new seat is not to your liking, complain about it and get another new one.  Do a comparison of another bike like yours in their inventory to see if the seat is of the same poor quality and workmanship.  You may find that the seat you now have is another bad seat.

Good luck to both of you...

Don,

Where can I find the original number?

Thanks.

Rob

Just checked the parts manual Rob.  Original part number is 52128-08 and there is now shown a 52128-08A.  So there's been one revised version released.  No idea what the change might be from that.  You just know that something has changed.

Thank you very much Don. I have an email into the parts manager where my seat was exchanged. I gave him the parts numbers and asked him to verify what changes were made. I will report back here when and if I hear from him.

Well, that was fast. He sent me an email regarding my seat. Apparently the numbers you listed were for the 2008 FLHTCUSE and not my 2011 FLTRCUSE. He said my number is 54112-11 (as Danner mentioned) and has not been changed since the beginning of the model year.

So I guess I am back to square one... :-\

Rob,

You need to order the parts manual for your CVO. the part #'s are in your owners manual. I have ordered all supplements for my CVO. You can never have too many manuals for you scooter. They are worth their weight in gold, when you have to go up against any parts person.

Parts manuals are online at Ronnie's HD also.  Quicker, cheaper (free) and more convenient than paper manuals.

So, it always seems that the stock seat is never comfortable enough to keep (and the replacements seem to be worse). It would be nice for all the money you pay, to have a seat is as equal in quality as the rest of the bike. I have never kept my stock seat.
I currently am using the Sundowner. I discovered it when I had my Ultra - Broke my Saddleman 3 days before I was going on a trip. Had to get a last minute replacement and the Sundowner is all I could get. Turned out to be the best seat for me.

Still would be nice for the stock seats to be as good.  :-\
