Seat Material...Leather or Vinyl?
« on: July 03, 2011, 09:04:38 AM »

Well, I got a date with Mean City Cycles to re-do my H-D Sundowner seat. It has a small rip so in addition to the comfort upgrade I'm having the cover replaced. So, I'm looking for opinions. Leather or vinyl?

Leather is my preference.  It's more  comfortable 'cause it 'breathes' and doesn't cause your bottom to sweat like vinyl will.  It will, on the other hand, absorb water if it rains so you need to cover it with a rain cover at night if expecting rain and it won't wear/last as long as vinyl.  Doesn't get as hot in the sun it seems.  Looks better but requires maintenance that vinyl doesn't.  So.....that's some pros & cons.  spyder

if you ever have to ride on a soaked leather seat for some days because you forget to properly cover it for some minutes you will not ask this question again  ;D

Rain cover is required gear for leather seats and don't party too hard and forget to cover at night if possibility of rain before morn.  :drink: har.  spyder

Leather.....definately. :2vrolijk_21:

I've been caught in the rain for hours on a leather seat.....no big thing.............................................................as long as you have your rain suit. ;D

Leather, for sure.  Just treat it with a good leather conditioner from time to time.  Not the HD goo, but a real leather conditioner.  Keeps it supple and does some waterproofing as well.  I used Glare Leather treatment on my Corbin leather seat that was on my '06 SEUC and it always looked like new.  Water beaded up on it as well.  I cover my whole bike at night when on the road though...as a general rule.

Leather for sure, at least on the seating surfaces.  It may be interesting to know that Corbin uses leather for the seating services and vinyl for the remainder.  When I ordered my custom seat I was happy to have all leather.  I was advised not to waste the money.  Corban claims that The vinyl  sides of the seat help it hold its shape longer.

Thanks for the responses. I had originally decided on leather...but a response on another thread had me thinking. I realize it will require extra care...but I'm hoping the increase in comfort will be worthwhile.

Look at it this way, would you wear vinyl chaps and a vinyl jacket? :nixweiss:

We loved vinyl (a.k.a naugahyde or pleather) . . . . in the 1970's DISCO era!   :huepfenjump3:

But on a HD seat?  Uh . . . like Nancy Reagan . . . just say, "No!"
