2000 SERG dies twice
« on: July 28, 2011, 03:46:59 PM »

My 2000 SERG has died on me twice.  Both times it happened just as I was starting to move from a dead stop at a traffic light.  I also noticed on both occasions that the idle went below 1K, between 8 and 9K, which it usually idles around 1K.  The engine fires right back up, but it is troubling especially today because I was entering onto the freeway.

I read on I believe was the V-Twin forum that someone had a similar issue and they pulled the right side cover to expose the FI module connections, cleaned the connections with an electrical cleaner and it seemed to alleviate his issues.  Has anyone had a similar issue and can you provide some advice?  I looked under the cover and see connections, but I am not familiar with what to disconnect and what is the proper procedure for doing so.  In other words, should I remove the neg. battery cable before disconnecting?

It's obviously the MM FI model and has a DynoJet Powercommander, although I don't know the type of aftermarket pipes or any other engine modifications that may have been performed on the bike as I am the 3rd owner.

Thanks and I appreciate any help.

Were it mine I'd contemplate the following in pretty much the following order.  The order being based on easiest/cheapest to troubleshoot first rather than expected cause of failure.  But they're all relatively easy options

Do the obvious and make sure all the battery cables are good and tight at all their ends.

Check the big connections from the harness to the Power Commander and Power Commander to the ECM.  Make sure they're not corroded anywhere and that they're tight.

Check connections to cam position sensor and the crank position sensor and all the connectors up by the throttle body.

Fuel filter and/or pinholes in the fuel line inside the tank.

If nothing has corrected the problem so far I'd change the crank position sensor then the cam position sensor.  If none of that fixed it I'd cuss.

Yeap, have seen those die about as commonly as CPS.  Also no code when they do.  Just a more expensive piece to try so try it farther down the list.
