200 rear tire
« on: July 21, 2011, 01:01:44 PM »

Anyone ever mounted a 200 rear tire on a '09 up CUSE? Less than a 1/3" inch difference, seems like it should work OK.?.?

Verify wheel width too  :nixweiss:
Mounting a 150 from the oe 140 on a '04-'08 Touring rear wheel required a wider wheel to eliminate side wall stress.

The wider the better, right? I'm not talking "Monster Wide", don't want to look goofy. 200mm max.

Not sure where you plan on getting a 200 series tire to fit a CUSE.  I don't find anything in the Dunlop catalog, and the only thing in the Metzler catalog is a radial that has a lower load rating and requires a wider rim.  Are you planning a rim change?

Stock:

180/65B16  81H     Rim - 5.00"    25.33" OD, 7.19" max width, 1019 lb load rating, 130 mph speed rating
------------------
Metzler ME880:

200/60R16  79V    Min Rim Size - 5.50"     25.94" OD, 7.76" max width, 963 lb load rating, 149 mph speed rating
------------------

The Metz is more than a half inch wider at the widest point; measure the clearance you currently have between your stock tire and the belt and other parts, and then calculate how much clearance you might have with that wider tire, if any.  Then look at the O.D. (outer diameter).  The Metz is larger by about .61", do you have enough clearance at full suspension compression to keep the tire off the wiring and inner fender?  You also have to leave extra clearance beyond the bare minimums, since everything has tolerances and variation.  And guesses aren't good enough when dealing with safety.

Unless you're a fully qualified chassis and tire engineer it's probably best to stick pretty darn close to what the qualified folks say is the right tire for the vehicle.  What do you plan to do when someone tells you "go ahead, I put a 200 on mine and it's fine" so you buy it and it doesn't fit properly, gets cut down by the belt, rubs the wiring and shorts out your lights, and eventually causes a crash?  Relying on non-expert anonymous folks for safety related decisions isn't something I would recommend.  Reminds me of the advice handed out around here some time back about removing front brakes so folks could show off the fancy wheels they installed.  Might be fine if you want a show bike and plan to trailer it everywhere, but not so much if you plan to actually ride it.

Thanks Jerry, The kind of answer I needed. A fully qualified chassis and tire engineer I'm not, so best let it be. The small gain aint worth the risk. BTW the Metzeler is what I had in mind. Thanks Again!!
