Anyone else less than impressed with iPod integration?
« on: August 24, 2011, 07:16:56 AM »

Wondering if it's just me, but it seems as though the iPod module isn't ready for prime-time. I get strange, inconsistent operability issues whenever I have the H/K set to iPod. Seeems as though it is very slow for search functions, selections don't always take, locks up frequently, and can get "stuck" in strange loops.

For example, set iPod to "shuffle" - track advance seems to go through via artist rather than random play. I've also experienced where track advance (again, set iPod to shuffle) loops through the same 5 - 10 songs. Using a nano on a 2011 SESG2 (I've also verified H/K firmware is up do date) - doubt it's the nano as I haven't seen any operation issues when I use it with the PC or stand-alone.

So ... are there folks out there that are thrilled with this accessory or are you like me ... it's ok but nothing to write home about?

Thanks for the report.  This was going to be my next purchase, but maybe I will hold off a little while.

Agreed, I think it works "ok" but I think it is kind of clunky overall.  Slow to respond (sometimes), selections don't "take (sometimes) and scrolling through albums or artists could be better.

I'm going to set up a few playlists and just choose them so I don't have to make too many changes on the fly.  On a SERGU, leaning way out to hit the soft keys can be a little tricky, esp in traffic.

That will be my solution as well, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of the iPod. Might as well just rip a bunch of CDs using mp3 format. Gets to be a pain to scroll through ~200 songs though. I'll admit I'm VERY iTunes challenged so I'm still playing around with what can be done to make the iPod accessory a little more functional.

I have had similar problems.  I have my Ipod velcroed inside my fairing behind the headlight which makes it easy to get to if I ever needed to add music or adjust playlists.  Also I felt with the front shocks there would be less vibration.  For the most part, it operates fine, however occasionally it does freeze up, and when it does, you have no option but to allow the battery to run out and then it's fine....or at least that seems to be my only solution.  Now, I do not believe it has anything to do with the IPOD interface module.  I think it has everything to do with the amount of vibration a HD produces and the Ipod unit itself having issues.  I never had this issue when my Ipod was mounted to my handlebars, thats the reason i chose to keep it in the fairing, but apparently there is a difference????

Yep, I agree. I usually run mine on play all, with shuffle selected.  If I turn the bike off, the ipod doesn't come back on when the bike is turned on again.  The track seems to be paused, and you can't get it to start (sometimes I can get it to play a second or so, then it pauses again). Only solution is to prod all the soft buttons till it starts (always at the first track again!) then back up through them again.

Keep watching for firmware updates, but none recently

I've got my Nano 16g mounted on my left controls with a Chrome RidersClaw that really blends in. I then sent my HK out to Iron Cross and had them install the iPod connector. while it does not allow the display on the HK, with long playlists, it's no biggy. With this set up, the front Aux is still open, the volume is static, and completely controlled by the HK, and the nano charges, so it's a great option Imho over the much pricier MOCO kit.  Works great for me, fwiw

I wish the factory radio had an USB input, like most radios today, and most cars. You can connect your ipod with its own usb cable and see and control everything. also you can just copy folders of mp3s to say an 8gig usb thumb drive plug that in the usb slot, and then scroll through the names and folders.

The main reason is probably the 480.00 extra dollars Harley gets.

my 2 cents.

You might try hooking the Nano up to your PC...if you've got all your songs stored there...then doing a reset on the Nano, and re-installing all the songs.  It's worth a shot.

Mine "acts up" on occasion, but if I cycle the "mode" on the radio around and back to Ipod, it seems to straighten out the issue of the moment.  There are definitely Gremlins in there though.

Yep.  Not ready for prime time.  Definitely better than nothing.  Mine does not update the display at all sometimes.  It could be two songs out of date.  If you go back or forward a song it tends to refresh.

I do not mess with the soft keys while rolling.  I've not taken time to learn them well so I'd run into a tree!
