Garage door opener on my 2011RGSE
« on: April 02, 2011, 11:59:36 PM »

After reading this form for a few weeks as a "lurker" I decided to register. I add the 6000 series HID headlights. I HAD to take her out tonight after dinner to see what the difference was......UNREAL! I too will NEVER ride again with the stock yellow tinted standard bulbs.

Here is my problem though: When I got home from the shop, the high/low headlight switch did not open my garage door as it had done since I brought the bike home 2 months ago. I tried to re activate the opener as directed in the owners manual, no luck

I am thinking that since the HID lights need a ballast, the headlight switch wire for the opener needs to be routed around the ballast. The problem I have is I can find no information from HD or any other form as to where the opener switch is mounted on my bike! I purchased one from HD for my 04 RK and it was installed on the neck. The RG is different, clearly. I can re rout the switch wire to either the high beam after the ballast or maybe to the ACC switch if anyone can assist me in locating that opener module.

Ideas?
Thanks,
Glenncarp

Should be behind the headlight under the fairing if it is like a batwing, when you get time go to new members and introduce yourself

The garage door transmitter is triggered by the high and low beam feeds with power and ground feeds separate from the high/low circuits.  In wiring up the HID ballasts and lights one of those was interrupted.  That's saying the obvious of course.  But it's just a case of systematically looking it over again.  None of the circuits are complicated.  So just step by step walk back through it.

First step will be to find the GDO transmitter.  Picture attached here to help find the unit itself.  It will have some connector on its pigtail terminating its harness where it mates to the bike.  But the module itself will be the same.

Make sure it didn't simply get unplugged or the plug got loose.  After that make sure it's power feed is hot whenever the switch is on.  Simple things first.

Perhaps most likely issue is that in wiring the HID ballasts you took the feeds from headlight high and low beam before the fed the GDO transmitter.  Again, find where the transmitter interrupts the headlight circuit, find where you went in to those circuits to trigger the HID ballasts and make sure the GDO transmitter isn't cut out.

Just installed H-D's HID's on my 2010 FLHTCUSE and the same thing happened.  Black Hills H-D has no idea why.  The HID light takes the 3 prong plug where the high and low beam plugs plugged in before.  From what I could tell the old high/low plugs just rest in the headlight cavity unused.  I taped them off and just packed them in the back.  I like the garage door a great deal.  I am thinking H-D needs to engineer a fix as they seem to have inadvertently messed with the garage door function.

take the bike to a local (trusted) auto stereo shop, Mine figured the issue out in about 15 minutes. They had to add a hot wire to the HID harness somewhere. Wish I was smarter to really understand what they did! Mine has worked again ever since.

 :confused5:
I encountered a similar problem with my Ultra and installing the new LED headlite.   I've got another posting on here that describes a GDO harness that HD sells that fixed my problem.

Since you are dealing with a ballast and diff. kind of lites,  that may not be the fix for you.

My GDO transmitter was located on the left side under the (outer) fairing.   I could not access those wires thru the headlite hole,  I had to remove the outer fairing to make the mod.   GDO works fine again.

I will post pics tomorrow but here is what I did...

On the left glove box door I velcro'd the garage door opener to the glove box door. So all I have to do is pull the door open an inch reach my fingers around the underside of the lid and press the button.

Its not fancy like the hi/lo switch but very effective!
