Stock or Aftermarket clutch?
« on: January 02, 2014, 07:59:47 PM »

I am getting ready to install a Baker DD7 in my bike to help with the first gear ratio while pulling a trailer. The question is, how much torque or load will the stock clutch hold? How about with adding an extra disk to the stock basket? Or is it time to need to go aftermarket...

Well the CVO has a cover spring that is stronger than stock but not as strong as the SE spring. With a tune the clutch can slip from what we see. Based on miles use you may want to opt for a barnett + plus plate kit and leave the stock spring in there if you add a cam or something than add the SE spring and call it good.  Or another route is the 480 spring +1 kit and the clutch wiz very light pull with that added on to the kit :2vrolijk_21: That would hold the mild cam swap and tune builds.

I have a Rivera Pro Clutch with a Jim's 131 and it was slipping while being tuned. Installed the Gold diaphragm spring and bam hook up right now. My take off with the trailer used to be a big chatter on my clutch lever now very smooth. Trade off is left hand doesn't like sitting at a traffic light very long so just put it in neutral when I have to sit at a light for very long.

In my mind I was thinking about the Barnett Scorpion. I am thinking of going 113 with the 585 at some point and with the lower gears and trailer I would be scared of the stocker....

In 2013, I put 12,000 miles on my '08 SEUC (with 10.5:1 pistons, TW-777 cams, PC5+AT, and Monster Ovals) with the DD-7, with about 8,000 of those miles pulling a max-loaded Bushtec Turbo+2 (around 300 pounds) plus 320# of rider+BSR, plus full saddlebags and TP.  We went up many very steep and twisty hills (Colorado), both in low gears and in higher ones--all with plenty of throttle twist.  This was with a stock clutch...and never had a bit of slippage.

No guarantee your clutch will be the same, but I can say the DD-7 granny gear makes take-off and slow speeds so much better, and the closer ratios between gears really keeps the power coming, especially on uphill upshifts.

I've moved the DD-7 from the SEUC3 to my 2011 SERGU, making it even more of a smooth, powerful tourer, as well as the benefits listed above.

Double.. That is exactly what I was wanting to know and the type of riding that I am trying to gear towards. Thank you

FlaHeat.... With buying the tranny and the odds and ends things I will do while putting it in will probably put the 113 build off for a bit. If your done with yours before then I would sure love to know what you think

I just put a S&S 124, Baker DD7 and Barnett Scorpion clutch in my 2010.  Ran great before the snow started flying.  Will be taking the bike up to Fuel Moto to complete the break in on the Dyno and get a tune on the Vision.  I would think that set up should hook up nicely.

Not sure about getting rid of the hyd, but Barnett does make the Scorpion in a hyd version for the CVO bikes. Thinking that is going to be my direction

I built an S&S 124 using the 110 heads(ported) and did the DD7 at the same time.  I upgraded to the SE clutch that comes with a new clutch hub and a 6 spring pressure plate.  I reused my stock plates as only had 12k on them but they do have huskier discs with more surface available.  They claim they will handle 160lbs of torque.  The adjustment to torque range is by a nyloc nut on each stud that holds a spring.  This was on a Fatboy but it showed no slippage in the 5k I've got on it so far.  My only question is about the life of the nyloc.
