Oh S**t, lost my left bag
« on: September 26, 2011, 07:36:05 PM »

I must apologize for thinking all you people who lost there left bag on the 2010 convertible being morons. I know the left bag was a little tricky to lock, but I thought all you had to do is smack it with you hand a few times and double check the install. Well yesterday, I went on a Vets ride to Montauk Point in Long Island NY with about 400 other bikers and my left bag flew off and got ran over about 4 times. I could not believe I could be so dumb. Harley should pay for these bags since the assembly plant did not align these bags properly and make them difficult to lock.  >:(

Sorry to hear about your loss. At least you know you are not alone.

A 'Left side bag auxilary retaining apparatus' will be one of the new items in next year's catalog.  I'm guessing about $2HD.

You think they would have to recall this because of the hazard it gives others on the road.  The potential of Risk is to high.

Still love my bike though. I would not give her up for anything. :orange:

Now the question is, do I order the left bag or go with the larger bags that are on the 2011 and 2012 models with locks.
Whats your opinion 8)

I would go with the 2011 bags unless your exhaust will get in the way. They are considerably larger inside and the lock is a bonus.

I actually can't believe I am reading this because the same thing happened to me. I was on my way to Boston (from southern RI) when my left bag went flying off on the interstate at 70mph. The thing was run over multiple times. I talked with HD and they acted as though it was impossible that a factory defect existed and bristled at the idea of sending me a replacement. Surley there are enough folks to make this an issue for them.

I bought a new bag. Cost was about 500.00. Also needed the bracket sold separately. After installing it, the bag slipes off and on very easy now without smacking it. I was thinking of getting the 2011 bags but were about 950.00 each.

be advised the 2011 bags have issues as well with the locks popping open if not positioned just perfect.  There are threads on this forum regarding this subject.  HD better not take the position that they have never heard of the problem, they fully covered the cost of my replacement bag.  Since then I have used black cable ties to secure the mounts when I ride.

Was it HD or your dealer that replaced the bag, I bet it was the dealer.

Nope, you would lose that bet.  I called HD myself and they both authorized and paid the dealer for the replacement ( I brought up the safety issue and the NHTSB).  The dealer was happy as well because up to this point they had been covering the replacement costs as you alluded to, but HD has received so many complaints they covered my costs and reimbursed the dealer for three earlier replacements on other ConV's.  Sooner or later HD is going to have to admit this is a problem and do a recall on the bags before they kill someone.

I see this topic and complaint mentioned several times and it always seems to be the left bag. Foutunately I haven't had any problems and I don't see the difference between the left and the right mounting. My bike is a 2011 with 5K miles and as you see by the photo
I do put the Convertible through its paces.

Funny that you mention "Left" bag, I lost the Right one at about 50 miles on my 2011 ....I was running down the road heard a noise looked back and there it went, flipping over and over into a yard. The only real damage was to the leather...my dealer AD Farrow / Columbus Oh was awesome, they had the bag relpaced in one day. They really took the extra steps as this is my first bike in about 6 years. The issue was the locking knob inside the bag was not fully engaging the pin that comes thru the bracket....it was a defect from Harley and handled very much to my satisfaction..df
