Still make a mess with the funnel. Still make a mess with anything you try sometimes. Best luck I ever had was a 2 liter pop bottle opened on the big end. But even that would slip sometimes; and still make a mess. There just is not a really effective solution that's not going to slip sometimes (and still make a mess).
Most recent home-brewed solution has been another attempt at front draining before loosening the filter. Took an old breater bolt and ground the end down to a point so it'd drive in to the filter casing then grab with the threads and tighten up. Hose on the other end of the bolt and let it drain out that way before unscrewing the filter.
Oh yeah, first time I tried that contraption I still made a mess. Realized it's use has to be a process application. Start out using it in the bottom and you'll, yes, still make a mess before the bolt gets tightent up enough to seal or before you can get the hose on it. So unscrew the filter a half turn (and hope you, yes, don't make a mess) to get the bolts insertion point on the high side. Insert it and screw it in, put the hose on, then retighten the stupid filter to get the drain point back down at the bottom.
One time even pulled the plugs and spun the engine a few times. Buddy doing the oil change wanted to "get all the old dirty oil out." Ding dong.... But for the last six months or so this has worked; some. Except for the times I just didn't screw with. And then still made a mess. And spent less time cleaning it up then I would have screwing with the contraption to begin with.
Oil changes are a pain in the ass.
