Big blog of keys/sensors/fobs....whatever...what to do
« on: December 07, 2011, 10:13:55 AM »

Good morning fellow biker lunatics!

It is a sunny and brisk 33 this morning. Over the last few weeks, it has been cooler (less than 45) in morning and I can say that my bike runs better -- quicker, smoother and COOLER!  hahah, not that this is a breakthrough. Just something to loosen up my hands for typing.

So, I have a house key, a motorcycle KRYPTON lock key, a Harley pushbutton lock and the magic ring fob.  You all must certainly know the size of the chunk of keys.

Next, for my work, I have my building key, office key and desk key.  Whole shootin' match checks in a 10oz.  Way too much.  The root cause is the TWO HARLEY big, giant, plastic stuff.

Looking for input.....what do you guys do with a pile like that?

Thanks you and Merry Christmas!

We use a sepearate key ring for each vehicle.  We also keep a duplicate set of each (just in case) in the safe.

Work keys have about twenty keys on it so it's a ring of it's own.  Company policy doesn't allow us to co-mingle work keys and personal keys, anyway.

Long time ago someone told me it wasn't good for ignitions to have a bunch of weight (keys) hanging on them because it could mess up the switch (don't know if it's true or not it just stuck with me :nixweiss:) so I've always kept a minimum of keys on that particular key ring and all other keys, house, work, etc. are kept on another key ring.

The only reason you even need the bike keys at all is to lock/unlock the ignition, Tour Pak, and saddlebags. I have the security fob, ignition key (which fits everything on the bike including the Tour Pak lock), and the house key on a small carabiner attached to my belt when I ride... and that's it. Everything else goes in the windshield bags, Tour Pak, or saddlebags.

I had the locks at home/office/cottage changed to one system so one master key opens all of them. For each vehicle there is a separate ring with one master key attached to it.

That is true mostly for the old GM keys (one side cut) not so much now with the bigger bulkier double cut ones.

I sure would like to find something to hold the alarm fob so it is not hangging with my keys!

Having everything keyed the same is definitely much more convenient, but I wonder if it isn't similar to having only one password for all your important online accounts?  Steal one key, and the crooks have access to everything. :nixweiss:

Back when I had a job, I had all work related keys on a single separate key ring.  My personal vehicle key rings only had/have the vehicle key and a house key on them.  Eventually I imagine we will all have microchips implanted under our skin that will communicate with our vehicles, offices, homes, etc. so we won't need keys.  This will work fine in most vehicles, but Harley will be unable to figure out how to incorporate our existing personal microchip so we will need a separate chip just for them.  It will be about the size of a hockey puck, and the battery life will be measured in months.  Battery changes will require a trip to a factory authorized dealer or physician; you choose based on your tolerance for pain and repeat attempts to get it right.

The fob is way to big and chunky for what it does, with technology these days it can be a lot smaller, the MOCO need to address these and come up with a different design.
I clip mine on my belt hanging off a small chain and in my pocket, only thing its quite bulky with a few coins in the same pocket.

Maybe incorporate the fob with the key so we only have one thing to carry round :nixweiss:

I haven't bought anything from this company but link photo shows the type of key rings I use. I have all home related keys on one ring then I use the other side for each vehicle and related fobs (so several rings). So I have different rings that I add or delete one at a time from the home ring. This setup also allows me to have one ring for truck (or car) and separate the house keys so they don't add weight to the ignition.

My car keys, etc. don't need to go w/ my bikes and vica versa. I've separate key rings for all my vehicles. Used to carry my bike keys on a belt strap until the snap broke. Now they're in my fairing or pants pocket when riding.

I toss the key fob in the saddlebag and it stays there. Only time it ever leaves is if I'm in a big city.

I'm in a big city.  My fob will not be in the bike.

Sure wish HD would design a fey fob that would work on more than one bike.  I just HATE by huge CVO key with a fob, then my softail key fob, my needed other keys etc...  the cvo key and fob should at the very least be one unit!  Sometimes I'm afraid to step in a mud puddle for fear of drowning....
