Mid frame heat deflectors
« on: January 06, 2012, 08:25:36 PM »

My wife is really complaining about the heat of her Ultra and I don't find mine all that bad.

The only difference is mine has true duals, but before I go that route I thought I would try the mid-frame deflectors, if they really do that much in keeping you cooler???

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

And no, she isn't having HOT flashes!   ;D

While moving they help move cooler air across the rear cylinder and down to the ground.  While idling they keep some heat from rising.  Every little bit helps.

To me they are the most helpful when you are stopped and your foot is on the ground.

I'm in central Texas, so heat is a major issue here, and the 08's run super hot!

I tried to go the cheap and easy route with deflectors and IED's (cheater resistors on the O2 sensors that fool the engine into running richer). They helped a little bit but not much.

Finally, got rid of the cats, put in fullsac baffles, free flow breather, and reprogrammed the computer.  Ahhhhhh.

For me, the deflectors and IED's were a waste of money and time. (not much money, but 3 years baking on a hot bike!)

By design, I'd think they'd capture heat around the rear cylinder.....especially in slow speed or stopped at lights.  The rear cylinder already runs much hotter than the front cylinder....don't need anything adding to that.

You guys may want to read this thread about heat shields....in particular, RJS Originals...

I liked the looks of the kuryakins, so that's what I installed first. They are a brittle plastic and did not last long for me. Maybe from getting hit or from vibration, I don't know, but they both cracked and broke off.  I replaced them with Harley shields and those are holding up quite well.
