Harley optional Windshields 58302-96, a little thin
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:48:59 PM »

I have a 2011 FLHTCUSE6 and just purchased a 58302-96 12" windshield to get the turbulence above my head but I was very disappointed with how thin and flexible [prior to mounting] 58302-96 is compared to the original 10" which is a good 50% thicker and is rock solid. I guess [hope] Harley have done their wind tunnel tests but out on the road running by big rigs I just hope 58302-96 doesn't flex adding to instability, Note I haven't mounted it yet and I am sure it will sit tight when it is mounted.

To determine the height I needed, I had some 5mm Lexan at home and cut my own shield....this is really "Don't try this at home" territory, it was a lot more flexible than the Harley shields and started flexing and causing severe instability around 70mph....but it did let me determine that 12" was a all I needed to go to...which was the point of the exercise.

I see some after market thicker shields but they don't ship down under so will have to look for a few more distributors and see if one does....at this stage I am thinking of returning the 58302-96, even if its stable, just looks thin.

It will definately be stable.  You've got a US version part number there.  The overseas version that is used in Europe and such is a thicker material for certain requirements.
They make a thicker HDI, European version in the same height.  Perhaps talk to the dealer?

You might try contacting Clearview...they are a vendor here and we get discounts.  Their windshields have a recurve on the top, so a 10" shield acts like a 12" with regards to wind protection.  I don't know if they ship down under, but it would be worth contacting them.  They make a quality product.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Looks like Clearview don't ship outside the USA. I did find one supplier that ships to Australia, product is The LRS Ultra Shield at http://www.longrideshields.com/ultra_windshields.html

Didn't find a lot of feedback on this one though, so will post this hoping to get some comments on the LRS, I did see some negative feedback about customer service so I am a little hesitant.

According to all the feedback on this forum a 10" recurve will give a similar buffet free zone as a 12" OEM, so if thats the case I would prefer to get that than the OEM 12". I do a regular 700km round trip on a freeway for business and the buffeting is too much to tolerate.

Freedom Shields will ship to you! John is great to deal with. I have a 10" smoked & 7" dark tint. I like both of them. His windshields are thicker than the Harley ones. The 10'' would be what your looking for. John is Freedom Shields , & great with customer service. You won't regret dealing with him. He also gives forum members a discount. Read the article about shipping.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I liked the look of Freedom too, so I'll give John a go.

Thanks everyone, I did get onto John (john@freedomshields.net), very responsive, does ship down under and gives CVO forum members 15% off, can't complain about that. I went for the 10" so am looking forward to getting this, I also like the thick look of Freedom, aesthetically it looks like glass, just a personal thing has nothing to do with performance.

This forum was very helpful, I was not aware of recurves so it was all a learning experience and has added a good safety factor for me as I would have stuck with the 12" OEM but was looking through that, HD will exchange it as I didn't use it. So I will still have a 10" which is just perfect for looking over and fanning the breeze in summer, sorry guys, it is summer here, no salt on the roads and the only black ice around is in a JD and coke !!....you can get back at me in June though, as I get down to Canberra, no snow but the roads do ice up in the morning.

I'll get back to the forum after I install it in January and let you know how it goes.

Just a courtesy for other suppliers, I am sure they have a great product too, but you need to go with one, so this worked out for me.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year  (yes I like being politically incorrect).....Jeff

Hey! While we are spending your money, check out Brukus.com. Saddlebag secure bolts are a cheap form of security for those expensive saddlebags. They also ship Down Under!

Merry CHristmas!

Have no fear, I do my fair share for the US economy :-)

btw, the only thing I was disappointed with on my CVO were the tour pack hinges, I mean here is this work of art dripping in chrome and highly visible on the top of the tour pak are this ugly stamped metal hinges...I have ordered the OEM chrome ones, but thought HD should have put them on the CVO line up

Do yourself a favor and get a second pair of hands when you put them on. The job can be done alone but really hard to handle the lid with one hand while inserting the screws with the other.

Ditto on the 2nd pair of hands.  16 rivets to drill out is time consuming, but we got it done.
