Conversion to ABS
« on: December 19, 2011, 03:23:05 PM »

Ok, so with all the wizzards here I bet I have an answer in 15 minutes or less to this Q.

2010 Street Glide Non CVO, Non ABS real wheel, is it just a bearing change to make it an ABS wheel?

Thanks

Clock is ticking. . . . . . . . . .  .

Put an ABS wheel bearing in the brake side of the rear wheel and you are good to go.

Thanks!  I assumed that since the ABS bearing is wider but thanks for confirming

You don't need a different spacer, the rear ABS sensor "is" the spacer for the brake side ABS wheel bearing.

(If you don't have ABS, you need a spacer-if you have ABS, the sensor is the spacer.)

It's the inside spacer, between the bearings.  Turns out HD has a kit to convert, has the 2 bearings & correct spacer.  They have a kit to go either ditrection at $69

I guess i should have said the abs bearing must be used with  the sensor/spacer and the non abs bearing
must be used with the regular spacer.

  wrong.

This made me curious.  Seemed prudential to actually look it up.  So off to the exploded view in the parts manual.

That manual shows no spacer on the right side.  Right side has #2 which is the wheel bearing with the ABS encoder in the wheel.  Outboard of the rotor is shown only the ABS sensor in the position that the wheel spacer would otherwise be.

The space I was talking about is # 13, in between the wheel bearings.  It allows you to tighten the axel and not push the wheel bearing deeper into the wheel, while keeping everything spaced properly & the correct side load on the bearings.

And yes it is different, that's why I was making sure as I had not actually taken the rear wheel of my 09.  Does seem strange since I have had the rear off my 06 many times.  It's these dang new fangled tires that go 13k miles, who ever heard of such a thing... :nixweiss:

In my 09 regular touring parts manual, the spacer between the bearings in the hub is 41349-07 and is the same whether abs or not.      :nixweiss:

Interesting, HD says it's different because the ABS bearing is wider.

But then I could tell you a story about what a local HD Dealer says is wrong with my charging system on my 06 CVO Ultra.  Sometimes they are just idiots.
