Same old topic, but I need photos...
« on: January 11, 2008, 04:53:37 PM »

OK, here's the deal...

Just arrived back from my dealer (great people) and the new saddle bag and seat for my Duracell, they both look great!

As mentioned in another thread I'm still wrestling with the over lapping gold leaf on the TP, which really isn't a very good job - photo attached.  The MoCo sent in a replacement lid and it was worse than my current one.

I was at the point of accepting that this is just the way it is suppose to be, even though I really didn't feel that way - just accept it and move on.  My biggest concern is that due to the fact that I removed my TP rack (whole other story) you obviously notice the defect more.  Fortunately my wonderful dealer is not willing to give up on getting a proper painted lid for me.

I need your photos of your TP lid similar to my attachment, as were trying to find one out there that is done correctly without the unsightly over lapping gold leaf.  Once we find one or two that will give my dealer the ammunition he requires to go back to the MoCo to show them what is possible when the job is done right.

So, I would like to ask you all to have a look at your Tour Pack lids (in particular where the gold leaf is joined in the middle directly behind the passenger back rest) and post a photo.  Then I'll copy the best photos and supply them to my dealer.

Thanks very much to everyone for their assistance.

Take care,
Grizzly

Dauum...that's pretty obvious where that joins.  I don't think I'd be real happy with that either.  Looks like they could have just made a nice seam there instead of overlapping like that, and it would look smoother.  Hope you get some more photos to compare...

Grizzly,

I don't own a CUSE3, so I can only go by the photo you posted.  That is about the sloppiest striping job I've ever seen.  It appears that they overlap the segments when they apply the stripe and then trim with a blade.  I can't imagine why they don't use a one piece die cut material, but the splice method would still work (similar to the way many folks do wallpaper) if they then had enough brains to pick off the excess material, rather than leave it and just paint over it.  Stick to your guns, that is not an acceptable result.

Grizzly,

Mine overlaps just like yours, must have been painted by the same person.  I have seen some better and some worse.  On my bike the gold leaf is actually cut at an angle!!!  I'm not going to worry about it, it sure beats what I went through with the paint problems on my '06 SEUC!!!!  I worry more about the heat problems, blown rear head gaskets, whinny 5th gear, etc, etc.....

Oh, I looked at my scoot again and found a joint of the gold leaf on the front fairing, just on one sdie....good job of installation, so they can do it right!!!!!

Here is a pic of mine.  No flaws at all.  I cannot even find where there is a seam.

Another.  If you need more let me know.  I can't find any seam on the whole bike in the gold leaf.

Well, fortunately for you, you're one of the lucky one's!
I'm not sure if you have voted in the poll yet or not, but so far 5 have no over lapping and 12 do.

Most will have over lapping throughout the bike, (I've been told with gold leaf it is very likely) but the seams are hardly noticeable EXCEPT on the tour pacs for some odd reason? :nixweiss:

Thanks for your photos and if possible a real close up (macro setting) of the center front of the tour pac (similar to my photo) would be wonderful!

Take care,
Grizzly

PS - What number is your bike?  Mine is #601 and maybe just maybe yours is a higher number and they finally figure out how to do it right???

Sorry, but my bike is #300 so it shot that theory out the door!  I will take some macro pics tomorrow and send them to you.

#697, no flaw that I can find in the paint, and no seam that I notice either.

#159 here.  I think mine is as bad or worse than yours.  BTW, You knew that the gold leaf and pin stripes are just stickers under clear coat, didn't you?  What should we expect for $40k?  That's Harley!

That's the scarry thing - go for another piece and it's worse that what you already have!

Yea - for 40k it sucks - but just go ride it and once it gets a little dirty you won't even remember it!
