Vibration-Motor Mount ??
« on: June 20, 2006, 12:51:32 PM »

Upon returning from the Elko Motorcycle Jamboree this past weekend I can feel some vibration in the handlebars and foot rests.  >:( Also a high pitched squeel upon deceleration.  :-/ HOW do I check the front motor mount ?? Anything else that would cause this ?? Anyone else delt with this. Have read the motor mount threads and want to be sure before I call the dealer. Thanks for the help-ride on  [smiley=banana.gif]

Hey Rat,
Where ya been?, How have you been?

To answer your question....look under the bike at the bottom of the mount. Usually you can see tears in the rubber or seperation.

Could the squeal be the belt? Check your belt tension as well.

Hey Jim, doing great and putting on the miles. Thanks for the info will look tonight at the mount. Would the belt be to tight to make the noise ? Your light job still looken good  ;D

Mono,

The belt being too tight could cause that squeal.   May want to check to be sure its in adjustment.

I've had two Ultra Classics, a 2000 and 2003, that developed loose motor mounts.  There are 2 mounts if my memoryis correct.  One below the oil filter and one above the heads.  There was what I called a "Chirp" that occurred on deacelleration, this might be your noise.

What everyone else said and make sure your compensating nut is tight under the primary cover-several have come loose.  I was lucky and found mine loose when installing the HD tensioner.   A lot of front motor mount failures.

Schreijo, I was wondering whether by "loose motor mounts" you meant broken mounts or the bolts securing them just needed tightening.  I retorqued mine at the 1000 mile service per the manual, but occassionally still hear the chirping on deceleration you referred to.  Don't think mine are broken, but perhaps I should go back and look at them more carefully.

The mounts vibrated loose.  The bolt was still there but the nut had vibrated off.  Since I had this concern I have always asked the HD dealer to make sure the mounts are tight.
