Cracked Y pipe
« on: February 28, 2012, 09:53:34 AM »

All,

I just heard from my shop that the front engine mount had broke and that ended up cracking the "Y" pipe.  As anyone else run into this.  Bike is a 2003 SERK with 33k miles.

Yeah, pretty common.
I ended up going to true duals, after replacing all the mounts, etc.
If you get a replacement on ebay, be careful.

Any good welder can weld it back for you. I did one once and swore it wouldn't hold and it's still running today.

My 03 SERK broke the motor mount too.  However, I had true duels, so no broken exhaust.

yes, very common indeed. On my Road Kings the header usally had to be welded or changed about every 20-25.000 m.

On my 03 SERK the front mount came loose and then the starter mount on the rear pipe-true duals-tore a hole in the header pipe.  Not being one to really want to buy a new pipe from Rinehart, I pulled it off and welded the piece back in place and it's been fine ever since.  Should hold fine now since the mount is fixed and I'll check it more often now.

My 03 SERK had two hairline cracks in my after header at 25K. Drilld Ends, veed out and welded.
Has run like a champ ever since.
I didn't bother to tack down another OEM Header as I am moving on to a Fullsac X-Pipe in a few months.

Another option is to move on to the 2009 exhaust system.
There are step by step instructions.

You have to buy and 09 or newer oil pan, the newer exhaust hanger.
The hanger is attached by drilling and tapping the Transmission case.

That happened in '97 to my '95 Ultra on the way back from Sturgis. We stopped off at a muffler shop and the guy welded it for $20.00. Held up strong till the day I sold the bike.
