air shocks pressure setting
« on: August 03, 2004, 04:23:03 PM »

Gentleman please help me here, in the last 2000 miles I have ridden, the shocks have been bottoming out severely (back teeth rattling). I have since raised the pressure on numerous occasions (I am now at 35psi) the book says 10 psi should be enough, mostly I ride solo (I weigh 260), forget 2 up they bottom out all the time. So what I am looking for is what are your settings(psi), weight (lbs.)and riding habits (solo or 2up)? I am trying to evaluate weather my shocks are bad (needing warranty replacement) or should I go buy some new shocks like the progressive 440's I have seen discussed in another thread. Thanks in advance, it sure is nice to have some place like this for answers [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Look at the progressive thread and read what I posted today. It is a new bike.

I'm running at 42psi. seems pretty good but still a jolt on a big bump. thats two up and fully loaded for camping. 350lbs. riders + 50lbs. gear. when we ride without the gear I run at 38psi. but will be changing shocks next year.

I don't remember, off the top of my head, but I believe that both of you guys are running over the max. air pressure.

I'm 6'4" and 225 lbs. (before my accident) and I ride very aggressively and rarely had it actually bottom out.

The shocks do hold their pressure, I guess I will bump it up another 5psi before I brake down and buy new shocks!!!   [smiley=confused5.gif]

FYI - I weigh 215 and when I ride solo I keep about 15 psi in the shocks which seems to work well.  It seems about every 2 months I do need to add more air to keep it at 15 psi.  I progressive shocks may be worth a long look.
